After spending a beautiful day at the beach, it finally happened ~ after more than 12 years of international travel and 20 countries ~ a theft occurred. Carlos and I enjoyed a day trip from his home town to Acapulco, but the day did not end as we had hoped. We enjoyed the entire day at the beach and it wasn't until around 5:00 p.m. that we turned our back from our cabana for minutes. In an instance both of our bags, containing everything we had come to the beach with, including many other important items for an international trip with were taken. I am not going to bore you with the items though. We suspect it was our waiter because he was the only one that had access. We quickly scavenged the beach, but to no avail. Within the hour Carlos' parents had arrived. With their help, we had the support from the Acapulco police, rather than just the "beach police". The "beach police" were not interested in helping what so ever. After another hour or so of talking with the locals at the scene, we were advised to go to the Office of Tourism and Public Ministry.
We spent hours upon hours in these two offices filling out the necessary paperwork. You have to imagine the condition of these offices. There were burnt out lightbulbs, no filing system, dot matrix printers, typewriters, etc. They just don't have the systems in place that we have grown accustomed to which is why it took so long. It was very important for us to go through the process though because most people do not take the time and because of that everyone continues to get away with everything in Mexico. While we knew we were not going to retrieve our belongings we understood the principle of the situation was the most important thing.
I now have two reports, which has considerably helped in canceling my credit card and cell phone and for the future replacement of my IL driver's license. It has even helped me obtain a Mexican drivers license here in the state of Guerrero - no written or driving test either - its helps to know people even here in Mexico. I will admit I like this picture much better than the one on my IL driver's license so I guess that's a positive out of the
situation.
Carlos and I even made the Acapulco paper the next day, even though the report used Anders Simons.
It was a tough day for us, but once again, we realized the important things that we do have in life and all of the material possesions can be replaced. But still, what were we thinking? For a brief moment, we let our guard down. Carlos grew up going to this spot on the beach and I was very comfortable for that simple fact, but the blond hair is always a target here in Mexico. There is no way I can fit in, even with a Mexican boyfriend...oh right...he doesn't look Mexican, at least according to all of the locals. Typically the Mexicans in Chicago and even the locals here say, "no, you are not from Chilpo. They are short and dark." So the story goes..."the two gringos". Let me tell you..."the two gringos" comment really pisses off Carlos' mom. When they arrived to the beach looking for us, a local said, "oh, you are looking for the two gringos, they walked over there" - all in Spanish of course. I think Paty gave them an ear full with
that comment.
So, while I cannot show you pictures from that day due to my camera being in my bag, I have decided to at least include some photos of Acapulco from my January trip. In January we enjoyed a long weekend with family and friends. We spent one day on the beach. While the views are amazing, Acapulco just isn't what it use to be. The water is quite dirty and all day long you have people walking up and down the beach trying to sell you anything from fruit to silver to straw purses. It can get quite annoying. Carlos' grandmother celebrated her birthday in Acapulco and the family rented a home in Las Brisas. If you have never been to Acapulco or Las Brisas, I would recommend it. You can rent the house ~ all different sizes, styles and packages are available ~ with all the cooking and cleaning is included. As you can see the views are AMAZING!!! There are also some photos from La Quebrada, which is famous for cliff diving. These guys, young and old, literally climb down one side of the cliff into the water across to the other side then the
climb up the other side. Once they reach the height they like they just simply DIVE into the water...some even with sticks of fire. A highlight of the trip!!!

Mi luna de miel was spent at Las Brisas in Acapulco, and we went to see the divers. I love the blog. Your pictures are wonderful and your attitude the same! Love you, Tia Linda
