I’m sitting in the spare bedroom, Segi is on my lap, and we’re listening to a party that has been going on since early this morning, since about 4. All of September here is pretty much a huge party. Yesterday was Independence Day, and let me tell you, it put the United States to shame (something that Mexico does a lot, actually). Maybe this is just unique to Denver, maybe it is different across the United States, but most of my fourth of Julys have consisted of barbecuing, watching fire works, and setting off fireworks. There never really included anything particularly patriotic, except for the few years I was the statue of liberty in the Southern Hills 4th of July parade (which, by the way, I hated). I can’t think of a song that I heard ... read more

I have a Min Pin puppy named Segi. He's really cute and I've had him for less than 24 hours. The poor thing can't control his bladder and he peed EVERYWHERE last night. I can't get a crate until monday, so I guess I'm going to have to "crate" train him with a box or something until then. If you have any words of wisdom for training a puppy, please let me know. As soon as I get photos, I will send them out. For now, this link is a pic of a puppy that looks a lot like Segi. Segi I had my interview with Rancho Labradores today. I think it went well, but I can't really tell. The guy who interviewed me was really interested in Casa Ayuda, as he works with a different ... read more

Relaxing days in San Miguel So, here we are, 3 months into our Mexico adventure and life is getting better each day. The weather in San Miguel remains perfect day after day. We still get light rain showers most afternoons, but it doesn’t last long, and keeps the place from drying out. We love the loud, earth shaking thunderstorms that keep us glued to the window in amazement, bringing that fresh, rain scented breeze into the house. Since the last journal blog, we’ve finished Spanish school, had a visit from Craig (fellow Oregonian / world traveler) and have had a change in our future travel plans. We have found life here to be very simple and if you look in the right places, you can find just about everything you need. One of the things ... read more

A list of funny stories I've been remembering about Mexico. If you're reading this, you were most like there when a few of them happened. -Being serenaded by Beto -Getting stuck in Callejon de los Muertos in the Pimp Mobile -Driving to Guanajuato in the Pimp Mobile -Getting a huge bug stuck on me on that ride to Guanajuato, and then getting lost in the tunnels under the city and reading signs like "If caught in a traffic jam, turn off engine, or risk possible harm" -Getting locked out and sleeping on the trampoline (multiple times) -Carmelo and his changing voice -My cat (may she rest in peace), how she died and how I came to know about it. -Getting caught and almost arrested on the Mexican side of the border for being an illegal. -Taking ... read more

This are going well here in San Miguel. I got the time wrong for my flight from Denver to Houston, I thought it was an hour earlier, so the start of my journey to Mexico was a little rough. I made it on time though and it was smooth sailing past that. My apartment is wonderful. The land lady (which is what I call her since I have NO idea what her name is and am now too embarrased to ask) bought some new furniature, so now there's a dining room table and a book shelf, not that I use either, since I eat most of my meals at Casa Ayuda and didn't bring any books. Things are going well at the Casa. The land looks wonderful. They have been collecting almost dead plants from their ... read more

We took a one and a half hour bus to San Miguel de Allende. It's another beautiful colonial town. We spent most of the day at La Gruta, a hot springs spa twenty minutes out of town. It was a divine way to spend the day.... read more

There are some big differences between the way I live my life in Mexico and the way I live it in the United States. Some of the differences are cultural, some are by circumstance. Since I am immersed in Mexican culture, I live how the Mexicans live to a certain extent. Of course I get the royal treatment because I am a guest. So it's not 100% accurate. But, for example, I sit at the table for 'la comida' and I eat and eat and eat. Do I think about how many calories something has? NO. Do I worry that I will get fat? YES. Do I let that stop me from eating? No. Because my job is to enjoy the food Marina has prepared. Will I eventually have to say that I'm full? Yes. Will ... read more

Hello friends, family, and those interested in Mexico... I have had all kinds of trouble with my blog the past few weeks. Part of it was my fault and part of it was because the server crashed and they temporarily lost my previous entries. As soon as they recovered my old entries, I printed them out. So everything's better now. I also switched families at the beginning of August to be closer to downtown. My family consists of 4 grown children and 2 grandchildren. None of them are currently living in the house, although Diego comes home on the weekends. Luis and his family live nearby and eat meals with us sometimes. He has two little girls named Fernanda and Cinthia. Claudia lives with her husband in San Miguel and she is such a sweetheart. ... read more

Hello friends, Sorry I have not written in such a long time. I could not get access to this page for a week or so. I have to go to class at 5pm, so I´ll have to write more later. Here´s the beginning... My mother has come and gone already. How time flies! We had a fabulous time together. Lots of quality time. Now I´m trying to concentrate on my Spanish and on meeting new people for my last 3 weeks here. Soon I´ll be telling you about my new host home. They are a wonderful family and remind me of my friends in Panama. I especially love how my Senor likes to give me lectures about Mexico. It´s great practice for me! However I notice my new Senora, Marina, and host brother, Diego, rolling their ... read more

Ok guys, My last entry must have been really boring because nobody commented on it. I agree. I just reread it, and it IS really boring. I'll try to spice things up a bit. So this weekend there's a film festival in San Miguel and all of the shows are free to the public! The name of the festival is Expresion en Corto which pretty much sums it up. The films are all very short and it's all about expression and giving struggling filmmakers a place to show their work. On Saturday, I went with my other two housemates to Teatro Angela Peralta (the major theater in town) to see the documentary ¨Lost and Found in Mexico¨by Caren Cross. (Who, incidentally, we met the night before because her daughter runs a summer art camp for Amercian ... read more
