So, we're going back to San Cristobal today. We won't make the same mistake as yesterday and we'll have a good breakfast with lots of coffee, and make some stops on the way. especially since we didn't sleep well what with the festivities last night... We packed up the car, but went to El Caldero for breakfast before checking out. Filled with coffee & food we left the hotel and drove to the Chiflon waterfalls. The roads were surprisingly good, especially once we got out of town and we made it to the falls in less than an hour. We paid the entrance fee (once). I'm guessing that the whole 'pay entry twice' scam is typical of the area between Ocosingo and Palenque, and nowhere else. The Chiflon falls park is well organized, there's plenty of ... read more

Today we decided to take it easy (a lot of good thatdid us). We packed up and left the hotel towards the Mayan ruins of Palenque. As expected, you have to pay twice; once to enter the national park, and again, four kilometers later, to enter the ruins themselves. then, of course, you have to pay the local crook to 'guard' your car (read: ransom to not steal it and everything in it). Then you fight off all the crooks peddling tours, and you finally make it to the ruins themselves. The city is very impressive, even though it's mostly rebuilt by archaeologists. The Mayan buildings are very big and very impressive, and the city is big enough that you can feel almost alone there, despite so many other visitors. Tamar and I wandered around, read ... read more

We had a disappointing day today. We got up early and set out towards Palenque, with planned stops at Agua Azul cascades and Misol-Ha waterfall. Maybe, if we have time and we're not too tired, we'll go see the Mayan ruins of Palenque today. If not, then tomorrow. The drive started out fine, we drove out of town and on pretty good roads. The road eventually got narrower and had more twists & turns as we drove into the mountains. Every time we passed a tiny village or even a stall on the side of the road selling coke to truck drivers there were topes. We were soon driving through a mountain jungle, twisting and turning like spaghetti, slowing almost to a stop at every tope, and gritting our teeth at the ones we didn't see ... read more

Today we’re leaving Cancun and flying to Chiapas! But our flight isn’t until 2:30, so we have the morning to wander around. We decided to check out the nearest market, Mercado 28. Yes, they number the markets. I’d read that Mercado 28 is a good place for real local food and vibe. We left the hotel at 9, because nothing in Cancun opens before that. It took us just 10 minutes or so to get there, and the first stalls were just opening. We needed breakfast too, so we sat at one of the restaurants there. All very touristy, the kind where they come out to greet you and try to force you inside. But lacking options we just ordered coffee and toast while we waited for the market to open. The entire market consisted of ... read more

A knock at the door and think I hear, "Housekeeping." A slight pause gives me some hope that perhaps I was dreaming, dreaming as a beautiful girl, clad only in a bikini and preparing breakfast while I sip my tea, the tropical breezes drift through the thatched bungalow. With a single finger, she beckons me toward her as........."Housekeeping!" It's is coming from the door. Yes, I'm awake. The girl is gone and the steward is waiting for us to leave for breakfast so he can clean the room. What time is it? Last night I noted a one hour time change listed in the ship's "When & Where" daily program and I promptly moved my watch back one hour. I would think that would be true with the ship moving closer to San Diego each day. ... read more

We finally tore ourselves away from the gorgeous city of Oaxaca after three weeks of lazing around, eating loads of local dishes and getting some more work done on the truck's suspension. We also spent a few days up in the mountains near Oaxaca and enjoyed a couple of hikes on some well-maintained trails that are also popular with mountain bikers. We both loved the city but agreed that it is probably a bit bigger than what we're really looking for in terms of a place to call home. Pollution and general air quality weren't great either, partly due to controlled brush burns up in the mountains, which is something for us to consider. It was a great time though and so far one of our favourite places in Mexico. We broke up the long drive ... read more

We’ve been travelling around Mexico. At least a part of Mexico. We only have three weeks. In three weeks you can’t really get to know a country. But you can get a feel for it. For me this trip is a bit like a taster of Mexico. A glimpse of what there is to see. One day I will be back and I will do it properly and give it the time it deserves. For now, the three weeks we have will have to do. Starting off in Mexico City, a city that itself deserves three weeks, and even then you will only have seen a small part of what it has to offer. Mexico City is huge. We had three full days. In those three days, we saw three things properly, the Templo Mayor, the ... read more

Dann ... read more

I didn't do much, but walked the city center. I was waiting for a night bus to San Cristobal de las Casas. I had my first official Al Pastor taco of my trip here. Checked out the nearest church. Noticed that there were some homeless encampment in the church courtyard.... read more

Hola, Tonight we'll lay our heads down in Hotel Centra, Ocosingo, Mexico, which is the first place in two weeks that is a little off the beaten track. The two weeks in Mexico have not disappointed us, however being off the tourist route today has been fantastic. Ocosingo is a halfway point between Palenque and San Cristobal at about 110 kms south from Palenque. The journey in the collectivo (Toyota Hi Ace that seats up to around 17 people) took about 2 1/2 hourson winding roads through lush green jungle clad hills/mountains....... fabulous. Within an hour of arriving in Ocosingo we were heading 12kms on another collectivo to the Mayan ruins off Tonina. This is the fourth Mayan ruins site we have visited and throughly enjoyed walking to the top of the 71 metre high pyramid. ... read more
