Hola,
we didnt get to see many of the festivities last night because I got a bit sick (all better now) and we were both very tired anyway. but we did have dinner in the festival and saw many more pilgrims.
This morning we had to be up at 6.30 to have breakfast and catch our shuttle which would take us to the border, with another shuttle waiting on the other side for us all organised to take us to panajachel in guatemala. We met a Japanese girl, 2 Kiwis, a german and an american all hing the same way on our shuttle. we all know each other a little now. We had a 4 hour minibus ride to the border town of Ciudad Cuautemoc, then a 2 hour wait in line (but our bus driver did this for us with our passports) only to find out that in Guatemala there is a farmers strike, so all the roads have blockades and our bus (and many other´s buses) could not get to the border in guatemala to pick us up. The border eventually closed both here and in guatemala as noone would be ableto get anywhere anyway.
So, we had 2
options, go all the way back to san cristobal or stay here and tomorrow, the shuttle will pick us up again on the other side of the border. The american (from seattle Robinsons!) is going to stay with a friend who lives in guatemala and she gave her a call and found out that strikes in guatemala only last a day so that was the clincher, noone wanted another bumpy ride back again.
The town is very small, and it looks like only one hotel with a monopoly on accomodation. half of us stayed in nicer rooms for 200pesos each and we opted for 100pesos each, clean but dingy rooms and cold showers. There is one internet cafe (which of course i am at now) and only a few places for food, but luckily it is pretty cheap so we can make our remaining pesos stretch until tomorrow.
Dario and i took a walk around the town, it took about 10 minutes 😊
we have already taught some of the others on our bus the game Conga and tonight it looks like kicking back with a couple of coronas and some more cards.
Now we have had a request to try and write some in spanish, so hopefully my spanish has improved a bit and those who can, will understand what i summarise in spanish below.
Hola,
