Que familia!Que familia!Que familia!

We spent part of the day in Chiapa de Corzo, which is the colonial town approx. 12km outside of Tuxtla. Pictured here with Carlos is Efren and Carla with two of the three children, Grace and Johnny.
We continued our journey to the adventurous and mysterious state of Chiapas. We arrived into the Tuxta Gutierrez airport mid-day, which was our first stop. We spent the first two nights with Carlos' family: Aunt Carla, her husband and three children: Stefano, Johnny and Grace. It was a great first two nights with the family, especially for Carlos because he had not seen them in years. We definitely had a great time, especially with the cousins. Grace, who is 6 years old, helped me with my accent, Johhny, 10, practiced his tour guide skills giving us plenty of useful information and Stefano, 15, practiced the guitar with Carlos. It was quality family time.

Tuxtla, the state capital, is not a tourist destination, but it is a very lively and modern city with everything you need. It is the starting point for the trip to the Canon del Sumidero. In 1981, the Chicoasen hydroelectric dam was completed at its northern end, damming the Rio Grijalva which flows through the canyon, and creating a 25km long reservoir. From Cahuara, we put on our life jackets and boarded the 30 passenger boat for the trip through the canyon. Soon after we passed under

a highway, the canyon walls towered 800m above us. It was truly a spectacular site and hour long boat ride.

While most of the passengers stayed on the boat, we were dropped off at the Parque Ecoturistico Canon del Sumidero, which is an adventure park located in the middle of the jungle. Carlos' cousin, Stefano, joined us for the day as well. The only way in or out is by boat. We spent the day at this adventure park which was full of activities including: swimming in the pool, repelling, zip-lining, jungle hiking trails, etc. Along the way we encountered juguars, pumas, toucans, etc.

The highlight of the day was the zip-lining through the jungle. It was much easier than we had thought and the views were breathtaking. It was such an adrenaline rush as well.

Towards the end of the day we decided to take a break by the pool. We had some drinks and food at the full service restaurant. Stefano wanted to swim and as most 15 year boys are he then wanted to dive off the top of a ledge into the pool. This didn't turn out to be the best decision because

he cracked open his forehead as he dove into the pool. He ended up getting 5 stitches. We were quite impressed with the attention the staff provided to us and also how we all handled the situation. We had to wait another hour or so before we could leave the park because the boats return to pick you up around 5:00 p.m.

We were off the next day to San Cristobal de las Casas, which is in the highlands of the state of Chiapas at an elevation of 2160m.

The last 15 minutes or so of the return trip we were literally pelted by rain. This is Mexico during the rainy season...when it rains it really comes down. Once again, we have had great luck because the day was perfect up until the last 15 minutes.
