Hey Everyone,
I have now being in Beautiful Whitehorse, Yukon for 2 weeks. In the past two weeks i have worked my fair share at the Local Hospital. My experience so far has being amazing. This City is what I am going to call a northern Utopia. I have already falling in love with the sights, sounds and people.
Everyone is impressively friendly; i think this is where Canada gets its rep. for being so pleasant and gracious. I have being welcomed into open arms by everyone: locals, nurses and fellow travelers.
So for the main reason i am here, WORK! I am enjoying working up here it is very different than in Toronto, hardly any doctors and not the same mentality towards care. There are Pro's and Con's for every job but definitely more pro's up here. I have mostly being working in the hospital’s 3 bed ICU, which can become very busy super quickly. Have being able to control Ventilators and even take Arterial Blood Gas stick's. Loving the different scope of practice sometimes, but other times it is just scary. I am only two weeks into working here so i have around 3 more weeks to figure everything
out.
The city of Whitehorse itself is very unique, lots of young, active and hip individuals who love to travel, be outside and exercise. I have had the honour of meeting a lot of genuinely great people. The town has all the bare necessities; Starbucks, Tim Horton’s, Earl’s, Boston Pizza, Mc Donald’s, grocery stores and bar's haha. The biggest surprise for me so far is the price of food. It is not expensive at all, it is quite similar to prices back home in Toronto and sometimes even cheaper. Lucky for me there are lots of different small restaurants and quaint cafe's. No shortage on good food. Some of the different foods that i am not use to consuming are mostly the meats. Local diet can consist of Moose, Elk, Bear, Bison ect...The local Artwork is also something that must be admired. It is just great examples of Northern Native artwork and I definitely plan on buying some before I leave
Now one of the greatest thing's Whitehorse has to offer is its lifestyle and beauty. You live in the valley of snow-capped Coastal Mountains you have endless amounts of hikes, trails, and bike paths just outside your door. Outside
your back door is Canoeing, kayaking, and rafting down the Yukon River. For the outdoors type i do not think anything can compare to here, a complete outdoor utopia.
This region is nicknamed the land of the midnight sun, which i have to say is one of the most interesting things about this area. As of right now the Sun goes down around 11:30pm and is up before 5am. Very soon there will be almost no darkness for 24 hours, which is amazing. I can’t even explain the feeling of leaving for work at 5am and the sun already up in the sky. There is absolutely no way to tell time, i have tried and it is usually wrong haha.
The surrounding area of Whitehorse is gorgeous as well. A group of us traveller’s went to Kluane National Park and it was breath-taking. Massive snow covered Mountains touching the clouds, line the horizon and turquois glacier feed lakes still covered with winter ice. Unfortunately we were unable to do some big trekking since the mountains are covered with too much snow (another time). The park is also known for having one of the biggest Grizzly Bear population’s, a little fact
that made me quite uneasy especially at night. Lucky for us we never saw one grizzly, probably still hibernating away.
The camping was great, slept in two person tents on a very picturesque campsite. The days were warm but the nights were very cold, definitely needed to get bundled up and stay by a good fire.
Now I head back to work for a few days. I am excited for the next few weeks up here. Planning on heading into Skagway, Alaska for some touring and then into Hain's, Alaska to the beer festival in the next week alone!
Hope everyone is doing well, I am back mid-June to Toronto.
