DAY 11 – 360 KM – WHITEHORSE TO MOOSE CREEK CAMPGOUND, STEWART CROSSING We were all up early, hitched up and out of the park before 9:30AM. The day is a little cooler and cloudier than we’ve become used to but so far, the predicted rain has not begun. Today’s route took a right turn soon out of Whitehorse, north onto Highway 2, the North Klondike Highway . Our scenery throughout the day was along rivers and lakes surrounded by thick forests across rolling mountain tops, while we drove along a bit of a rollercoaster highway. Our first stop was at the information and viewing site for the Fox Lake wildfire site near Little Fox Lake. This huge fire in 1998 was started from a campfire that was not extinguished. The evening got a bit more exciting when I was sitting in the cooking shelter at the campground before I went to bed. I was sitting quietly when I heard a bang on one of the garbage containers outside. I looked out and there was a wolf. It was skulking about, but didn't run off when I went outside to take a photo. That was really neat. I only got a couple of blurry photos of it, but I am very fortunate to have seen one. It doesn't happen often that a person sees a wolf. After I got up, I headed on down the highway. I soon passed Eagle Plains which was the halfway point and continued on down. I had been having a bit of a scare with gas mileage. Even in Dawson City, the sun never really seemed to set. I remember it setting behind the mountains, but I was still able to see it shining off the clouds above. I don't think that ever ended, but I did go to sleep before it would have, so I don't really know. But I woke up a couple of times and it was never dark. It's kind of weird. I got up early and got paid up, for I had arrived after closing time the night before and had yet to pay for my stay. This was no problem and the woman in the store was quite friendly.
