Kristen and I headed back to Saskatoon on May 25th, leaving Linda to finish the school year in Kaohsiung. She'll travel back to Saskatoon on June 14th. First on my to-do list was to rotor-till and plant the garden. I took a trip out to say hello to Doris, and have dinner with her. At the same time I picked up the tiller in order to work up the garden and get it ready to plant. Jesse had rotor-tilled the garden last fall, and what a difference it made. He had also done a good job of cutting and fertilizing the lawn and it looked wonderful. Highway Greenhouse is just a few blocks away, good thing, because it took several visits to get the right amount and color of plants for the pots. Between Jesse and ... read more

The summer fun had ended, including a fun-filled week with the six grandchildren. There was no excuse for not getting onto the planning for the long-awaited trip to Saskatchewan. But first we had to get there. It is a fair distance from Pender Island to Preeceville, SK. We loaded the truck with all the “stuff’ we needed for a fairly complex trip. Camping equipment, “visiting” clothes, dress-up clothes for the Celebration of Life for Dianne’s Dad, books, cameras, computers (in case I get inspired to write the blog as we go; as you can see, I didn’t)… lots of stuff. Dianne had been reading a lot of material about camping holidays. Especially the part about pulling off the road and camping for free when you are just stopping for the night. She planned our route with ... read more

Today we left Stettler for Saskatoon. After getting very specific directions from Dawn, we managed to get ourselves promptly lost. I know - who gets lost in Saskatchewan? Us apparently. We ended up taking the scenic but not so smooth route on Hwy 51 through small town Sask. After travelling 18 kms through a construction zone on deeply rutted roads and large gravel, we got turned around by a flagperson and had to go back. Someone's wide load was too wide, got stuck, and was blocking all through traffic. Doh! It turns out that getting lost was a gift. We got to witness two pronghorns in full run. Luckily we had lots of time to brake as they crossed the highway right in front of us. Sask got a lot of rain this year which was ... read more

... read more

"Things to always remember while on the road: Bring distractions and their according accessories, never trust a fart, and never turn down a clean shower." I've been lucky so far as to have followed these rules, but the campground we stayed at on Saturday night was a grim reminder of just how little attention some people put into their campsites. Molded concrete, rusted metal, broken toilet stall doors, a $1 per minute fee on the cobweb covered shower, this wasn't a cleaning complex; it was a high end jail cell. And that was just the facilities, the overgrown brush all around and the mud that was the ground did an elegant job at keeping the earlier rains from being soaked in and absorbed. Ever wonder what it's like to sleep on mud? Yeah, me neither, but ... read more

Here are the photos from our Winnipeg to Saskatoon portion. It's an important part of every Canadian's education to see these provinces! While just 30 minutes into our trip out of Winnipeg, waiting for a construction stoppage to clear, a train passed by (photo 1). A long train. Three miles long. Do you know how long it takes for a three-mile long train to pass you when you're stopped for construction? Well, it actually takes forever! After we diverted north on the Yellowhead, we noticed that the farms were separated by these unusual trees (photo 2). Previously, I've seen hedges, shrubs, dead tree limbs, and the occasional piles of detritus, but these trees have a remarkable interest to them - as if they are saying, "Go ahead and plant your soup peas, Mr. Farmer. I'm still ... read more

As grey traces of dawn tint the eastern sky, three travellers - a man, a woman, and a cat - emerge from the forest shadow. Fjording the rivers Red and multiple times the river Assiniboine, they turn north, journeying into the dark and forbidding lands of the Notleys. Even now the intensity of her power can be felt: weakening the oil price and saddening the pocketbook. If they cannot pass through this barren wasteland, they will become empty, mindless specters, stripped of will and soul. The journey to Saskatoon was uneventful. The scenery looks better in real life compared to photographs. Come out this way and discover it for yourself! Gerry doesn't see it as acutely as I do. I think Saskatchewan is a beautiful place, though I was frequently velocitized and made the most impressive ... read more

Every one of the Dreamchasers' Adventures - 2013, 2014, and now 2015 - has been amazing in its own right, and each of them different. We remain grateful for this wonderful life full of opportunity to learn, to share, to somehow give back and hopefully leave each place we visit a little better than we found it, in some infinitely small way: maybe something as simple as a nice memory we exchange with the people we meet, for the one they have given us. Maybe more. Reflecting back, here is our list of highlights from Dreamchasers 2015: Seeking Sunsets, Manta Rays, and Mantras. 1. Travelling with our son. It was very special to have this time together with our son Tanner and his partner Annie, who joined us for four weeks in Lombok and Bali Indonesia. ... read more

To Canada for Alec's funeral We had spent Friday, Feb 27th in Kaohsiung grading papers, assignments, working out, researching for our upcoming trip to China, and resting. We even treated ourselves to a Skype visit with Mom and Dad in Canada for almost an hour, then watched a few episodes of Boardwalk Empire. We went to bed around midnight. At 4:12AM, we got the call informing us that Dad, Alec Tarasoff had passed away while getting out of the jet tub at his home. His tired heart had finally given out. He had been joking and in good spirits moments before with Mom. Maurice scrambled to get flights. We got a flight on Monday and arrived back in Canada the same evening. While Maurice made travel decisions Linda planned for her substitute at the school for ... read more

After returning from Singapore, we were pleased to welcome Jack, Linda's brother. He arrived for a good part of his holiday to visit with us and see how we live in Taiwan. He had spent 8 days in the Philippines and flew into Taipei. He was able to catch the high speed rail from Taipei to Kaohsiung, with the help of the locals of course. People here are always ready and pleased to be able to help tourists, and practice their English. Maurice met him at the train station and brought him to our apartment. The first order of business was to get him comfortable riding the scooter. To spend 10 days with us, scootering independently was a must. Jack did just fine, and did a fabulous job of following 5 meters back and a meter ... read more
