Puvirnituq, Quebec

Presently, Jonathan and I are living and working in a small Inuit village in Northern Quebec. Puvirnituq is a mediem sized community of about 1500 people on the coast of Northern Hudson Bay.

The Overview

Just in case you missed parts 1, 2 & 3, here is a somewhat complete overview of our adventure in the North so far…
Jonathan and I arrived in Puvirnituq in early August, 2005 so that’s where this story begins…

Jonathan went fishing with one of the Inuit teachers, Paulusie. They went fishing about 60 km. North of PUV near Akulivik. They went by boat via the Hudson Bay with an 18 foot canoe in 5 ft. high Hudson Bay waves. They caught 60 Artic Char, 1 seal,6 geese and 1 Caribou. Paulusie feeds many families in PUV.

Halloween in PUV

Halloween is very popular here, we had over 150 kids show up at our door for candy. In a village of 1600, with 60% of the population under 20 years old…150 kids isn’t so bad!?!

Beluga's Come in

The beluga whales come in only once a year. It is every Inuit’s favorite day because fresh Beluga skin/fat is their all-Time favorite food. Every village only gets a limited amount of whales as they are an endangered species.

As you can see, all the village comes out to not only grab some of their favorite grub, but also to support their local Beluga whale Hunters.

Muktuk is the Beluga skin in Inuktitut. Jo and I tried it and we agreed that it tasted like raw almonds, and that it is very, very, very chewy.

When a Blizzard hits, hard snow dunes, some measuring up to 5 ft high, appear everywhere. The snow here is very fine and very hard.
