Greetings from Toronto, the largest city in Canada and also an important financial centre, although it is not the capital (which is Ottawa). Overall I like Toronto, it's quite a modern city but it's very clean and safe, the people are very friendly, and it's beautifully located along Lake Ontario. The most famous sight is without any doubt the CN tower which can be seen from almost any place in Toronto, I think it's the highest building in the world. I'm staying in a hostel, although in a small private room which was nice after a long flight and six hours time difference to adjust to. The place is just great, there is free pancake breakfast every morning and they even have a bar and an outdoor terrace open at night. The staff are great as ... read more

So I have arrived in Toronto after a long 8 hour flight, but which passed in absolutely no time. The First class terminal in Frankfurt was absolutely fantastic, I could have spent a whole day there eating free food, drinking expensive wines, surfing the internet, reading, sleeping, taking a shower, watching DVDs (they apparently have several movies you can borrow and watch on a laptop). I wasn't really hungry when I arrived, but I just couldn't leave the terminal without having tried some food, so I went to the restaurant and ordered a steak which arrived in no time. Asked for some red wine and the waiter brought a whole trolley with eight bottles or so on it, just to choose. Too bad I was too full to try one of the rare whiskeys in the ... read more

Wow. The trip that we've talked about for ages is now right on top of us. And still, neither of us can believe it! I thought I'd have moved past the denial stage by now, but maybe it is beginning to sink in after all. We're planning to take 6 months and travel through India, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and China. October 28th is our departure date - first stop, Delhi. Hopefully we don't die of shock. We're gradually crossing to-do items off our list and the mound of gear in the living room is steadily growing larger...... read more

We woke on Friday the 15th of September and went in search of the famous Niagara Falls. We managed to avoid the parking stations (including the apparant free one in Lonely Planet which is now $10) and found a secluded park for free about 1km from the falls. Whilst driving around looking for the car space we drove past the falls and it was amazing to see the spray coming off the water. Shane had to turn on the windscreen wipers and people on the side of the road were wearing attractive vinyl ponchos. Upon catching our first glimpse of the Falls we were both totally amazed by the power and amount of water going over every second. It is so much more amazing in person and thinking of all the people that have been over ... read more

Like the troopers we are, we were up and out of the hostel by 8:30, and into a cab to the airport for our 11:30 flight. This cab was only 17 euros, compared to the 30 it cost from the airport - I think it must have been because it was a Saturday morning and there was therefore less traffic to fight. Our cab driver was enamoured with Canada and was eager to hear anything we could tell him. He told us he’d wanted to go to Canada ever since he’d seen a documentary with a grizzly bear catching fish out of a stream using his paws. We encouraged him to come over and answered his questions about distances between cities (when he got the answer “Days” to questions about how long it would take to ... read more

Right now I'm in the middle of the preparation month. I met the group and they're great people that I can't wait to go to Ghana with. There are five of us--me, Elisha, Amy, Katrina, and Sarah. The first week we spent near Guelph doing intense workshops, getting to know each other--and ourselves, and learning a bit more about the journey that lies ahead. Our co-ordinator had these sort of inspirational, tarot-like cards. You pick one or more to read and they can give you hope, inspiration, or just put a smile on your face for the day. I know I might be making these cards sound cheesy, but one day I picked three and they were eerily very relevant to my life at the moment. One card told me to unleash my "inner vision" and ... read more
