It's been a while since I’ve chatted with some of you . . . so what have I been up to?? Well, it's been a great few months. A lot has happened but I have to admit I’ve been slacking on the e-mails, so I’ll give you a bit of a summary . . . From May to July I spent 3 awesome months in South East Asia with Nicole Marcotte. We had a great time touring Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. Some highlights include trekking, beaching, tubing, kayaking . . . I could go on and on! Then I spent the last couple of weeks in Australia visiting Dylan Smart who's lovin' the hockey life down under! I also got to spend a weekend with Steph and Omar who Nicole and I had ... read more

I caught the greyhound to toronto & then cruised round downtown for an hr or 2. Then Adam (from Yeppoon, we used to be in the surf club together) came and picked me up and took me to his place about an hr & a half away. Adam moved to canada to work in a roofing company as the head supervisor (top bloke). I met all Adam's mates, all top fellas and we went out partyin. I borrowed his mountain bike and cruised around then went up to a small sky hill that had a heap of mountain bike tracks through the bush, good fun & I didn' even hit a tree! 1 day adam dropped me at this shopping center that had a ice rink in the middle of the food court. So I had ... read more

I know I know it’s been ages since my last web page. Sorry to those of you who can’t live with out it (A.K.A Mum and Dad). Hope you enjoy this one. It’s been a hectic couple of weeks with heaps of family and friends in town (hence the title) The Crothall (mum’s side of the family) clan all started arriving about two weeks ago in preparation for my cousin Sarah’s wedding. This was held on Sunday the 3rd of September. Right in the middle of all this my great friend and traveling buddy Kate Lacey comes into town as well. There is lots to tell but I’m going to focus on the long weekend just been. It started on Friday with a fantastic family BBQ round at Adam’s place. John my uncle cooked lamb chops ... read more

On the 11th of September 2005, I had the privilege of being included in Brampton's Fire and Emergency Services Honor Guard, whilst attending the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Ottawa. Under the Honor Guards guidance, I was presented with a unique opportunity to represent not only the New South Wales Fire Brigades but Australia as a whole, in a world class memorial service tribute to our comrades that have tragically offered their lives in the line of duty. The flag party usually comprising of the Canadian, Ontario and Brampton Fire and Emergency Services flags, had a unusual International flavor this year, courtesy of S/FF Chris Arthey, Chris had taken it upon himself to scour Ottawa and walk for miles to obtain an Australian flag, to held by myself and to be included in our flag line. ... read more

long time offline. sorry about that. we're back. our time in india has finished, we had a whistlestop return to the UK, before flying out here to North America and Canada. I'm sitting here in a hotel lobby, trying desperately to remember what we've done for the last month. lets try to summarise in a paragraph or 2... the end of india turned into a fast paced touristic frenzy. train to Agra, and a great visit to the Taj Mahal. Generally I don't go for looking at stuff but the big marble palace built as a symbol of love for a queen who died, by a husband who then died alone and staring at the palace, locked up by the son who wanted all the cash. then another very long train trip to amritsar to see ... read more

For those that have been around Fitzroy, VIC or Newton, NSW some parts of Toronto will be familiar. The area of most interest was Queen street West. This is the side of the city I got to see on the first few days in Canada. Toronto's much celebrated multi-cultural population is fairly evident, but not dramatically different to Sydney or Melbourne. I do like the Canadian accent and the smiles of many of the people who are both friendly and outgoing. With only a short time in Canada and with a keen need to see more of this country, I decided to head into the wilderness. This led me to the Algonquin National Park, one of the closest parks to Toronto. It was about 3.5 hrs north. One of my limitations was that I was not ... read more

On the 26th of August 2005, I performed my first Canadian night duty on "A" shift at 201 Stn Brampton Headquarters. The shifts are slightly different to Australian ones, the Canadians like us do the 10 hour days & the 14 hour night shifts but it's in different blocks, instead of the Australian system of 2 days followed by 2 nights followed by 4 off, the Canadian ststem comprises of; The Canadian system works along the lines of 5 day duties straight, followed by 5 days off. Then 4 night duties straight followed by 5 days off. Then you work 2 day duties (Monday + Tuesday), then 3 night duties (Wed night, Thurs night & Fri night), followed by 4 days off. Confused...You should try working it. For the first few weeks, at the end of ... read more

Toronto Jim and Pauline were our gracious hosts for our four days in and around Toronto. On our first night we were invited to the Maguire mansion for a tasty dinner with Jamie, Rita, Jenny and JP. On exploration of the city itself, we saw the CN tower and went on a city bus tour and boat tour around the harbour and islands. Niagara Falls is as busy as it is breathtaking. We were crammed aboard the Maid of the Mist in order to be drenched by the spray of the falls. Thankfully our sexy blue ponchos kept us reasonably dry. Lonely Planet warns that Niagara Falls is a place filled with the Newly Wed and the Nearly Dead. Dave reckons it should therefore be called .... wait for it .... yep .... Viagra Falls.
