Port BurwellRained heavily again last night - forecast for the day was rain so we were happy we had decided to take a country drive today rather than fight the city public transport in Toronto.
Filled up with fuel before our trip $1.17 per litre. RV took $170 to fill.
After visiting numerous cities on this trip we are starting to feel a little tired. After all each new city requires new research into their public transport and city parking. We are saving ourselves for Quebec and NYC!
Well the country drive ended up being an 8 hour round trip through some lovely towns and villages along the water front trail of Lake Erie - Port Burwell to Port Dover. It was a very relaxed day - one of those days you wish would never end.
The scenery was lovely - farming areas, rolling hills, small villages, beaches and mariners. We are well and truly travelling in the off season now which has its pro's and con's. Most of the tourist attractions are now closed - which doesn't bother us. On the up side there is hardly anyone around and that's a real bonus.
The beaches along
Geoff on the beachthe lake where you normally have to pay for day use are open but the offices are all closed so no payment is required off season. Most seasonal stores are also closed till next spring as well.
We stopped for lunch at Port Burwell - had a walk down to the beach area - it was blowing a gale and freezing cold - not another person in sight. The wind was howling along the beach and the waves from the lake were thunderous. I cooked up a hot lunch of turkey bacon and eggs while Geoff ran around taking photos of the turkey vultures!
There were several wind farms along the route, plenty of corn and pumpkins farms, orchards, wineries and those iconic barns I love so much.
Saw our first snake of the trip today - Geoff spotted it along the road side - managed to turn around and a get a photo of him - turns out it was a Eastern Garter - a non venomous snake. The only venomous snake found in Ontario is the rattle snake. I'm sure there are a few of them hanging out in those old barns.
Afternoon Tea
Beach - Lake Eyrieat Port Rowan Harbour - we bought a coffee from Tim Hortons and found a nice quiet spot right on the water to enjoy our coffee. The harbour was lined with boat sheds - the water was quite calm around this side of Lake Erie.
"Turtles Crossing" a road sign we saw numerous times today. Have to wonder what you do if a turtle does cross the road - may have to stop your vehicle for a day or two.
Tim Hortons is a popular coffee place for Canadians. These shops are found in Canada and in a few of the eastern states of the USA. Doesn't matter what time of day or night you go past these stores you will find a line up at the drive thru. North Americans enjoy their coffee as much as their beer.
Arrived back at our campground in West Toronto just after 6pm - did the washing and started to pack up some of our clothes as we will be dropping of the RV on Friday and picking up a car to continue our travels in Canada. We decided a car would be the better option to get around the
Turkey Vulturecities up here - good move we're sure!
We have found the KOA campgrounds to be reasonably priced and they all have had excellent amenities - although bathroom and laundry facilities are quite old but very clean. We paid $44 per night for our spot with full hook up facilities. They are good campgrounds for families as they all have swimming pools, playgrounds, etc.
Maximum temperature here in Toronto was 12 degrees C today - expected low this evening 3 degrees C.
Tomorrow we will start our journey to Ottowa.
