Woke up and left Kap early, en route to Thunder Bay. Driving from Kap to Hearst was pretty uneventful besides the MASSIVE WASHOUT. It was like some dinosaur came and bit a chunk out four feet deep in every direction. Sorry, no pics. I'm still really slow with the camera..I missed taking photos of like 5 giant plastic animals..it seems most every town in Northern Ontario has one. We stopped to look at the spectacular Palisades at Lake Nipigon. The palisades are impressive walls of rock with juts and struts. I have a (bad) photo of them on the flickr site as well as the plaque they had up. There was a waterfall as well but I couldn't find a good angle so I didn't even bother. On the other side of the highway was the ... read more

Hello Everyone! I've finally gotten settled here in Helsinki so I will start posting all my pictures and notes. Feel free to read as much or as little as you want... you can even just look at the pictures if you'd like. I'll try to keep in touch with everyone, but there's much to see here and I may not be able to write to everyone individually. I started my journey by travelling home to Kakabeka for Christmas. It was a short visit, but I got to see (almost) everyone. Arrived on the 21st and stayed till the 26th. Unfortunately did not see much snow as climate change seems to be having a big effect on Canada this year. Christmas Eve was at Grandma and Grandpa Glenn's as usual for the traditional talent show and roast ... read more

And it comes to an end. Our month-long journey from Toronto to Vancouver ends on November 6th, 2006 with a day of driving from Thunder Bay to home sweet home. Pulling out of Thunder Bay at 5:30 a.m., we caught the sunrise as we drove through the beautiful Superiour region just east of Thunder Bay. We were determined to get home today to see everyone, and we were actually a full day ahead of our anticipated schedule. Both of us were very excited to get home and getting such an early start allowed us to see the sunrise, catch some Z's, and have a good old heart to heart before we both returned to life in the city. I am so happy that I was able to do this, and that Geoff and the folks at ... read more

The trip to Sudbury was uneventful. Both Geoff and I had been to Sudbury before so there were really no surprises. We had decided to leave on the Monday instead of early Tuesday morning because we would have had to make it to Thunder Bay in one day. I’m glad we decided to do that because the drive to T- Bay turned out to be arduous, even with a few hours taken off. Geoff and I were both really surprised not only about the amount of time it took to travel there, but also the scenery leading up to Thunder Bay. The drive was the longest so far but it was also the most beautiful. I had no idea that area was so hilly. The fall colours added to the beauty of the scenery and I ... read more

So, we're here in Thunder Bay. Kyli and I drove over 2000 miles in 2 days so we could get here and get a site around noon and relax for an entire day. Ahhhh... Canada has been pretty cool so far. Very big and quite rural. Even the big cities don't seem that big. :) The Canadian highway kinda sucks, but the view has been spectacular along the way. I don't know when we'll get Internet again so I'm posting as much as I can about the last few days/week. I will elaborate on them as soon as I can. I was going to add more pictures as well, but I'll need to resize them first since the Internet connections take too long to upload. So be sure to check back (maybe it'll notify you when ... read more

On my tour to the outhouse at four in the morning, I saw the Northern Lights displaying their wayward glow against a starry sky. I haven’t seen them for over a decade. Last night under their glow I found myself back on the hill below our house in Calgary, with my sons Sean and Cameron, sitting in the snow and watching an exceptional display of the Lights with cones of red and green exploding above our heads, thinking that the rays would touch down around us any second. That was the best display of the lights I ever saw. Back in bed, I thought about my plans for the new day and realized how stupid they were. What was the rush to get out of here anyway? Ron had offered to have me stay for a ... read more

Somewhere this week we figure that we have reached half way on our trip by distance, but since we are not sure of the exact place, we decided to have a week long party! why not? It started with a 3 day canoe trip in gorgeous Quetico Park followed by a relaxing day in Thunder Bay chez my good friend, Fiona, where we took in the World Cup soccer and Blues Fest festivities, not to mention the infamous Finnish pancakes. Thanks Fiona and Jeff! To re-cap up from my last entry; most noteworthy is that we are now a group of three on the road. In Pipestone, Manitoba we met up with Dan, a young man from Chicago who was on his way to Vancouver but after a few weeks of solo riding he was in ... read more

Motorhome News from North America 14. 5th - 15th June 2006 Saskatchewan - Land of Living Skies The tree-lined streets of Moose Jaw City hide a dark history of bygone days. Back in the 1920s, pool-rooms, brothels, gambling houses and Chinese opium dens greeted visitors as they stepped from the train - and Al Capone is said to have stashed much of his bootleg rum in the neighbouring caves. It’s changed a bit these days and, apart from us, just a few other people of distinction have come riding into town in more recent times. A plaque in the park commemorates the visit of HRH Edward the Earl of Wessex in 2003 when the city celebrated its centenary. His mum, Her Majesty The Queen, came too, in 1978 on the town’s 75th birthday. Moose Jaw itself ... read more

I believe this date is correct-ish. In 1997 I was dating a girl who really enjoyed camping and taking long road-trips. She has probably seen more of the world than I ever will...well, lets hope not. At the time, the only thing I could think of were the long car trips as a child/teenager. -In the back seat, seeing little to nothing, feeling as though you might get sick at any moment because I don't think my parents ever had a car with AC. She convinced me that taking a camping trip to Ontario would be a lot of fun. I was hesitant at first but decided it could be romantic and so we went. As I remember, it was only a long weekend that we took. She had decided after see numerous "Amethyst is for ... read more
