As we drove into the city we could see this huge white cloud.
We thought it was smoke and then maybe steam from a factory.... maybe.
As we made our way closer to the falls we realized that all of that smoke-steam was the mist from all of the water falling over the falls.
There really was so much water.
And so much noise.
It was so loud!
We also did the Journey Behind the Falls on the Canadian side.
Now that was a little scary too walking in a tunnel and there is an opening so you can see all of the water falling. It really is loud and I realized just how dangerous and forceful water could be.
The area around the falls is like a theme park with lots of rides and games with even more eating options. We found Beaver Tails. Yummy.
Best thing ever.
It's a flat, fried dough that is topped with various different toppings. We chose Nutella. Mmmmmmmm.
We where fighting over it in the end and Obama had eaten one of these too.
Then it was time to head back to the US.
Let me
just tell you... that Customs on our way back into the U.S. was a completely different story.
We handed over our Australian passports and let me tell you that my husband has an Italian accent.
"Where are you from?" We where asked.
My husband replied, "We are Australians living in China?"
"But your accent isn't very Australian?" He questioned
"Well, I was born in Italy and married to an Australian."
Then the officer continued, "Is this red, Ford Mustang with a Texas number plate your car? Or have you hired it?"
"Ah. No. It belongs to a friend?" We answered.
"Do you have the papers for the car?"
We look at each other. "Do we?" We checked the glove box. We found them.
"So two of you have one surname and the other has another surname and the child in the back is?"
"Our daughter." We both answered.
I though to myself please stop asking questions. We just kept looking more and more dodgy with every question and yet another question.
"Do you have alcohol in the car?"
"Yes. We stopped at a Canadian brewery and we bought some for our friends who we have borrowed to
car from."
"OK," he said as he made eye contact with each one of us. "Pull over into the first lane and we will have to search the car. Turn off your phones and stay in the car until you are given further instructions."
We where silent and even too scared to speak in the car.
There was a number of cars waiting. The car before us had three men dressed in full Islamic dress with a long dress to the ground and long beards. They where escorted inside to the offices.
We where told to get out of the car and wait on a bench outside of the offices and leave everything inside the car. Including the keys and our phones.
Another officer came around the corner and questioned why we where out of the car.
I said very politely, "The officer told us to sit here." I tried to smile as I pointed to the officer. They checked under the car. The boot and under the seats.
"Ok. You can go."
We have never moved so fast in all our lives.
"Thank you officer. Have a nice day." We said as we walked back to the car.
OMG.
We got the heck out of there as soon as we could.
We retold our friends the story when we arrived back and he could not stop laughing.
It's funny how you second guess yourself even when you have done nothing wrong.
But with every question, I felt more and more dodgy.
We wont forget that experience anytime soon.
