A flight from San Francisco to Toronto takes us to Alex's cousins, who live near Mississauga on the shores of Lake Ontario. In the space of five days the temperature, for us, has plummeted from 25 degrees above freezing to 15 below. A change we are sartorially unprepared for! Thankfully we borrow some heavy coats, but I still to pop by Wal-mart to pick up some thermal long-johns. It's just TOO COLD! We spend a lovely few days being treated like royalty and gorging on Krispy Kreme doughnuts - surely one of life's guiltiest pleasures.

Alex's cousin Jaki takes us on a little jaunt to Niagara-on-the-Lake - home of Inniskillin icewine - and then to the Falls themselves. The spray has coated everything in a thick layer of ice - it is quite a spectacular sight! After a delightfully unhealthy lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe, we leave Jaki and hop on a taxi to the border town of Buffalo. A short flight carries us across New York State to the Big Apple, for the last couple of days of our trip.
