Last GoodBye, Tomorrow night my parents drive me to the Detroit Airport - I was informed by a friend that it's commical I chose an airport that may actually be more dangerous than my destination. Cheers, Dave. I am almost ready to go! One more sleep in my comfy bed (I have a feeling I will think about it's soft, cushy mattress often while adjusting to sleeping on my tent's floor for 4 months). *Random thought: I wonder if I'll be one of those people who needs to sleep on the floor beside my bed when I return home because I'll find it more "comfortable"? That would be so odd. I am uncertain about the feeling I currently have in my stomach? It's either intense excitment or, more likely, a side-effect from these nasty Anti-Typhoid Fever ... read more

2 suitcases weighing almost 70 pounds, 1 duffel weighing almost 50 pounds, a laptop bag, and a backpack later - I am all packed and ready to go! I'm going to look SUPER awkward trying to pull it all through the airport but what else were my options when I'm gone for 2 years! :) Mom, Ginny, and I (Dad is working) are heading to Toronto tomorrow night to spend the afternoon/evening relaxing in a hotel so that the 4am airport trip for my 6am flight doesn't feel so bad. I received confirmation from the school today that they will be meeting all of us coming in at the airport and then taking us to the really nice hotel called Honduras Maya, where we will stay for up to a week, until we find a place ... read more

Hello! I head to Africa in 12 days - August 1st. This is the first time I have actually counted the days. Guess that means the 'countdown' is officially on. There are definitely some loose ends I need to tie up here in Canada before I head overseas: I have to finish my last week of work at Turtle Jacks. I need to put together my first aid and camping travel kits. I need to do some summer activities with family and friends (such as go to Canada's Wonderland with my bro, canoe with my dad, dinner and a movie with my mom, campfire and sleepover with my girlfriends, see Ice Age 3, etc.). Still need to cancel my rogers phone plan. And tell my credit card company that it's ok if funds start coming out ... read more

I've been holding off on announcing the details of this job because I didn't want to jinx it. After a few months of e-mails, phone calls, and a very worried Walter (and me!) it's official: I've been offered a position in Honduras that I have accepted. The school is called The American School of Tegucigalpa and is located in the capital city. The position is a co-teaching position for grades 2 and 4. My co-teachers for each class will be covering the language portions of the classes (reading, writing, spelling, phonics, etc) then acting as literacy coaches for the rest of the elementary division. I will then cover the math, science, and social studies classes for both grade 2 and 4. The school curriculum is based on the American curriculum. They use Harry Wong's "First Days ... read more

I'm home now. I haven't decided what will come next. I may return to ships. I may return to Honduras. I may find work here. There's been lots of pressure from people lately to just settle down in Canada and start my teaching career here. It got me thinking. Here's what I came up with: I’m me I’m an artist. Nothing is black and white. With creativity and imagination, we have the ability to paint the world as we wish to see it. Everything is perspective. I’m a traveler. Sitting alone, watching the sunset atop a Mayan temple, enclosed by the calls of exotic birds and monkeys in the surrounding jungle - I found myself. I long to discover the world, and meet the people whose lives have been lived parallel to my own, yet are ... read more

The following day we picked up another rider off craigslist and drove back to Kitchner (near Toronto) to visit with other good friends from Jasper Luke & Megan who will shortly be moving back to Melbourne in Australia. It was great to see them again and we went out for dinner at an awesome all you can eat sushi and japanese restaurant! We stuffed ourselves and it was all delicous. As Megan had the next day off she and Hayley hung out for the day and started the preparations for a dinner party that evening. And Mick went to work with Luke at the Grey Silo Golf Course and enjoyed his first round in too long. The following day even though Luke had it off all three of us went back to the golf course and ... read more
