Just what are "tall ships", and why the strange name? They are sailing ships, with as much as 11,000 square feet of sails, that carry passengers or cargo or both, either commercially or for pleasure. The word "tall" refers to the height of their masts, which extend sometimes more than 100 feet (30+ meters) above the water. From the 15th century onward, relatively small wooden ships powered by the wind transported goods from country to country, and colonists to newly-discovered lands. It's only been about a century and a half since they began to be replaced by increasingly larger ships with engines and screws (propellers) that are the norm today. Although marine engineering has changed enormously since the age of "iron men in wooden ships", people still wax nostalgic for the days of yore when humans, ... read more

Geo: 44.5905, -75.6828Oops, took off and forgot to stop and do the Chocolate Factory Tour....oh well, we don't need it.Hold ups at the border, took a bit to get through to Quebec Canada, but nice and easy.On no! All the signs are in French, no English! Not much change in the landscape.Stopped briefly for drinks but girl could barely speak English, definitely French only here.Crossed the provincial border into Ontario, and relief, both English and French. People also speak English. Once we start coming down the lower part of the St Lawrence, the area seemed much nicer. Can't make Kingston, stopped at Brockville which was just lovely at a Super 8 - last room! Everyone's had it, so into town for takeaway pizza and home again. ... read more

Today started off a little less right than yesterday, and not just because the residences were on the North side of the street (we're still heading east). First, Therese noticed some mold on her breakfast sandwich in the residence, and so breakfast was not immediate. Since she had woken up hungry and eaten a few times in the middle of the night, this was not THAT bad, but we did stop for our McDonald's breakfast in Kingston on our way out of town instead of further down the road, and didn't really get going until about 8:15. This turned out alright though, since there was basically nothing for a long way outside of Kingston. Also, we were still quite sore from yesterday (and the previous day as well), and warnings of a thunderstorm coming in from ... read more

The RI Convention is over and we now plan our next move, a slight detour from the original plan. We planned to come home via Washington DC, and take the Autotrain back to Orlando. From there we would drive home to Tampa arriving June 30. Well, while visiting the Rotary Club in Virginia Beach we ran into Terry Bond, President of AACA (Antique Automobile Club of America) and he asked if we were going to attend the 75th Anniversary Jubilee and Car Show in Louisville Kentucky the following week. So we decided to change our plans, and a 2 week trip has now been extended to 3 weeks, and we have more time to explore Canada. We also have to break the news to Brando's mother that she will be "babysitting the kids" Jax, our silky ... read more

Ju-Vindale Holsteins of Cazenovia is this year's Dairy of Distinction winner in Madison County. Vince and Juliet Wagner have owned this farm since January 2008 after they sold their dairy in Myerstown, Pa. and moved to New York. They currently milk 58 cows, have 45 head of youngstock and grow all their crops on the 162-acre farm. The designation for the Ballina Road dairy continures the "Dairy of Distinction" tradition which began in 1984. At that time, it was owned by Harlan and Margie Jones. The Jones, along with Bruce and Sally Barnes in Madison, were the first two farms in Madison County designated as "Dairies of Distinction" and to place the distinctive white sign with the red barn in their dooryards. The Northeast Dairy Farm Beautification Program recognizes the hard work and dedication of dairy ... read more

I've been trying to access the CNSA website for the past few days, with no luck. Then Wilma and Lois informed me that this website is no longer in use. So if you want to see the latest news from the Canadian National Shuffleboard Association, you can google it and find all sorts of sites to go to. I found that Stand McCormack is no longer the editor of the CNSA, but he and Alf Primeau have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. I always wanted to meet a celebrity, so now I can say that I have! Congratulations, Stan!! Read all about it in www.cnsahof.org/Stan_Alf Wilma also informed me that Gary Pipher has replaced Stan as the new president of the CNSA.
