Laura Bilotta between friends at Singles Golf Lessons and Networking
Here's Laura Bilotta between friends at the start of the Singles Golf Lessons and Networking, 25 Aug 2016 Are you curious about what actually happens at a Singles Golf Lessons and Networking event? what about when its held at one of the most prestigious golf courses in Canada? That sounds pretty exciting to me.
I was hooked on the very idea, and so I signed up and eagerly attended the first (and only) Singles Golf Lessons and Mixer event ever hosted by
Toronto Matchmaker Laura Bilotta from Single in the City and the
golf instructors at the golf academy at Lionhead just to see for myself what happens, and maybe meet the golfing girl of my dreams.
Can you picture yourself out on the fairways, or putting golf balls at the greens surrounded by confident athletic people of every description? The one and only Singles Golf Lessons and Mixer was full of surprises!
First the weather was unpredictable that day. Thursday August 25
th 2016 was a hot summer day in Southern Ontario that suddenly clouded over with violent thunderstorms late in the afternoon. There was some concern the event would be cancelled, but Laura tweeted at 5:30 pm that it was set to continue despite the rain, and by 6pm the skies were clear. But everything was really wet.
So what happened at the Single Golf Lessons event? Rob with Fancy Pants at Singles Golf Lessons Event at Lionhead
Sam Dhutia from Sweets Canada offers gourmet chocolate to Rob in his fancy pants It started pretty casually with about a twenty minutes long social mixer around a sponsor tent that provided refreshments for people before the class was ready to form up and start the group lesson. There were about twenty of us and some real lookers – on both sides. And some real fashionable people too. Some single men had fancy golf pants, and another fella had a quirky hat on and there were some girls with their own clubs. The sponsors were both very interesting vendors and their wares were deliciously alluring; guests frequently returned to the sponsor table to nibble and sip their snacks.
Sweets Canada dispensed gourmet chocolate bars (crumbles) while the
Happy Juice Co made cold pressed juice available to the masses. These two sponsors nicely contrasted each other while not violating any exclusive food and beverage agreements already in place at the golf course (ie Pepsi not Coke etc).
At the driving range an young instructor named Ian Hogg gave a good account of how a golf pro tees up a shot, and what she’s thinking in the back of her mind and looking for in the terrain etc as she makes the shot. Ian drove his first ball right to the back of the driving range
Singles Golf Lessons in full sing
This was the scene at the Singles Golf Lessons event at Lionhead and everyone gasped – now we knew he was a professional! Then Ian did it again, and again, and each time he slowed down to let the rest of us copy his movements and emulate his great form and swing.
Singles golf lessons is considered innovative marketing in Canada, but its something that’s already very popular the USA where its warmer for a longer part of the year (and more people play golf). Unlike other singles activities, daters at the golf events meet up on a golf course ostensibly to sharpen their golf skills but also to meet people. Participants are organized into small groups where instructors ply them with physical assistance and imbue mental tips and tactics but most importantly they know enough to leave them alone to practice with the group in the hope they'll encounter other like-minded individuals who’ll share their passion for the sport. And in many way this is exactly what happened last Thursday at Lionhead.
Did the Singles Golf Lessons event go off without a hitch? Matchmakers like hitches, but yes - there were no injuries of any kind, nor was there any drama except during the Putting Derby at the
Rob Canpbell at Singles Golf Lessons Event at Lionhead
Rob the fancy pants golfer on the driving range showing off his swing at Singles Golf Lessons Event at Lionhead end of the event. Guests mingled and my pal met a great girl from Oakville Ontario whom he hopes to return to the golf course with next weekend.
The Putting Derby replaced the much anticipated One Hole Golf Game because the golf course itself was still really wet from the recent rain and nobody relished the idea of getting their shoes soaked trudging along the fairway. This challenge was much simpler and more time efficient competition. This attraction was held on the thick carpet-like grass surface of the practise greens and centered on a wooden prop which the instructors called The Putting Board. The plank had five different sized holes cut in the bottom, the smallest openings at the extreme sides were worth 50 points each, while the largest opening in the center was only worth 10 points. Two openings for 20 points each filled in the middle sides.
One by one each of the registered guests and even the sponsors Sam and David took their turns ‘putting’ their golf ball on the practise green toward the wooden target. Almost all contenders, myself included, simply hit the board - our balls didn’t go through any particular hole to
The Putting Derby at the Singles Golf Lessons event at Lionhead
Daniel won the putting derby at the 15 Aug 2016 the Singles Golf Lesson event at Lionhead score any points. We called ourselves ‘board members’ and were hoping for another chance to putt again when there were suddenly two winners. Two of the remaining participants did manage to get their balls through a hole. One young lady put her ball through the center most opening for 10 points and Daniel, the overall winner of the competition ‘putted’ his ball through the fifty-point hole on the right side of the board.
The prize was about $100 worth of free stuff, including gourmet chocolate, and cold pressed juice but also two free tickets to an upcoming
Single in the City speed dating event anywhere in the west Toronto area. Dan was certainly very thrilled and kindly posed for many pictures in the fading light. Fifteen minutes later most of the class was sitting on the patio at Iggy’s eating pizza and drinking beer – it was a great event, but one which Laura Bilotta says she has no plans for ever repeating. This makes me cherish the memories even more, and thus even more keen to record the event as it was here in my travel blog.
