Another wonderful breakfast at the Inn. Belle island is known for their abundance of iron ore mines, which have been shut down for years, we toured one of them. A 45 min guided tour underground was so fascinating-known as the safest mine in N Am. People from all over the world came to work in the mines starting in 1902. Also, Germany bought a lot of it during WWII. Picked up our picnic lunch at the Inn, headed to the lighthouse area over looking the Bay/ ocean. Beautiful! Finally saw a whale’s tail. After lunch, went to th theatre in the mine. Locals performed in one of the mines.Another amazing dinner,3course as always. Great time with new friends, wine, beer and local musicians came to the Inn for a jam session. Such a charming time!... read more

We have been kept so busy with tons of activities. Yesterday we went to Cod Sounds school of cookery in St John’s where we watched a demo of Brie cheese making by a local homesteader. Headed to Harbor Grace, where the airstrip Amelia Earhart took off from and other small museums. Dinner in Carbonear at Felicity’s mom’s house and local musicians entertained us. Great fun! Overnight stay in a quaint BnB. Rain all day on Thurs-Headed to Portuguese Cove to catch the ferry to Bell Island for 3 days at the Wabana Inn. After an amazing 3 course meal, a local artist came to the Wabana Inn to teach us to make a copper wire pendant. ... read more

Started out with homemade scones and a hearty breakfast at the Inn. Beautiful day for hiking and discovering Bell Island. Lovely pasture overlooking Conception Bay followed by another hearty lunch and dessert. The chef at the Inn has impressed us at every meal. Jerome our minibus driver drove us to the working lighthouse and at this time we received certificates which we were initialized as Newfoundlanders with their customary shot of Screech rum etc. We then headed to the town center where the residents had a street party, of course Jerome, the bus driver was playing in the band. Dinner impressive, again, enjoyed sitting outside with the group after dinner. ... read more

After 6 challenging days we‘re back in Newfoundland. Labrador is amazing, “the Big Land”. Beautiful country, Salmon rivers, big climbs and LOTS of black flies. The first night in the tent we thought it was raining, but no it was all the black flies caught between the tent and the rain fly as they banged against the rain fly. We used a lot of deet, but on the long steep climbs they had their way with us. We did see a whale including a dead one that had grounded on the rocks. We rode up to Red Bay to see the site of a 16th century Basque whaling station. Amazingly we had good weather, no rain, though windy and cold with temps in the 50’s. Warmer here in Newfoundland and though there are more mosquitoes there ... read more

Last day on our own before we meet up with the tour group tonight. Nice breakfast at the JAG Hotel before venturing out in the off and on drizzle all day, but that didn’t stop us for walking in it. In fact, a local said to us on the street ‘you must be from away’ and pointed to our umbrellas. That was good for a laugh! We visited the cultural facility, The Rooms museum, an extensive collection of artifacts of the Province. Also learned about the rich and diverse cultures that formed Newfoundland & Labrador as it is today. Lunch on St John’s harbor at Jack Astor’s and with plenty of downtime before our activities tonight. Tonight we’re headed to Yellowbelly Brewery-yep,another Irish Pub- with the group. (We did learn that the Irish ancestors are a ... read more

Today we leave the scenic Bonavista Peninsula and head south back to St John’s for 3 nights. Cloudy, foggy, and rain during the 3 hr drive. Downpour in some areas that were very challenging on the highway. Newfoundland has some interesting and quirky village names : Heart’s Desire,Heart’s Content, Dildo, Mistake Point, just to name a few we’ve seen. Once we got settled into the JAG Hotel in St John’s, we walked Water St, known for their many restaurants, and found O’Reilly’s Pub. This was the perfect spot for us listening to Irish Newfoundland music. As we ate dinner, we listened to the session of 14 musicians that gather through the week and entertain the patrons. Great fun, music, food, and local beer! ... read more

Today was cool, high 61, overcast but fabulous weather. Headed north -30 min- to the tip of Bonavista peninsula which was sunny and beautiful. Stopped at several small villages (see pictures with captions), once in a life-time adventures. We were fortunate to travel the road to Elliston, that’s under construction during the week(even though we drove a large stone/rock road),to see the breeding area of the Atlantic Puffin, the provincial bird. Today we woke up to an absolutely beautiful day- not a cloud in the sky. Went to breakfast in the dining room that overlooked the bay and Atlantic Ocean. Excellent tea, coffee, muffins, with eggs and bacon. Decided on a scenic 5K trail , Skerwink Trail, that overlooked the Atlantic Ocean. A popular whale sighting but none today - also icebergs broken off from Greenland have been seen floating near this area. This trail was very steep and narrow in spots but other areas were open - just gorgeous. Max and I were so thankful to have our walking sticks and our water bags to sip water as we hiked. After our 2 hr hike, we headed to Port Rexton’s Brewery for a local brew and scrumptious customized grill cheese sandwiches from their food truck. After a bumpy flight from Toronto to St John’s NL, we picked up our rental car and headed to Bonivista Peninsula to our B&B located in Port Rexton. On our way on the trans Canada highway, we spotted a moose running along the side of the road. Ok, we’ve only been in Canada for 1 1/2 hrs and we see a moose already!! Picture shows how close the moose was to the road. When we reached the peninsula, we had to turn around and take a 50 minute detour on the back roads because of an accident on the main highway. Did I mention in the pouring rain. We were so glad to pop the cork when we arrived at our destination. This area is absolutely beautiful, even in the rain and fog. I’ll have pictures ... read more
