Corner Brook to St. Anthony, Newfoundland

We woke up in our little room next to a big river in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and there was still no motel personnel on site. This was the first time we've stayed in a motel and never spoke with any staff. We paid over the phone with a credit card and the room was open when we got there.

Newfoundland is like Nova Scotia in that the roads and areas have cute descriptive names. Today we traveled the "Viking Trail" and it was magnificent! We wanted to see Gros Morne National Park and other than a four day hike, the best way to see the park is by taking a two hour boat ride on Western Brook Pond. This used to be a fjord but Joe says that isotonic rebound caused the land to rise and the channel to the ocean was choked off creating a freshwater lake. Whatever, it was a beautiful place and reminded us somewhat of Milford and Doubtful Sounds in New Zealand on a smaller scale. There were waterfalls just about where ever one looked and mountains with their tops chopped off by glaciers. To get to the boat we had to

walk 1.5 miles and the walk itself was lovely. On the way back from the boat we saw our first moose of the trip, at a distance. It's a good thing we've seen plenty of moose and whales in our lives, we would have been disappointed if we'd come here to see them as so many people do. We sat on the boat and walked the trail with yet another nice couple from Toronto. Seems everyone we meet is from Toronto, probably because there are 6.5 million people in that city.

After our boat ride we continued the Viking Trail North up through many small villages, all with rectangular houses void of any architectural features. The villages had charming names such as Plum Point, Green Island Brook, and Blue Cove. Somewhere between Flower Cove and Nameless Cove we came upon two friendly guys that were dressing out a moose and a caribou that they had shot. They said the meat needed to hang for three days, but if we were coming back from St. Anthony then they'd be happy to give us some moose meat.

For several miles along the road we were able to look across the

Strait of Belle Isle and see Labrador. Oh, so difficult to be this close and not go there. But, we can't do everything and we are loving everything about Newfoundland, especially the people.

We thought it funny that a live moose was right where this sign said he would be. He's the brown dot in the upper right.

Thank you for sharing
Judy, I've so enjoyed your daily entries as I have not been to this part of the world. This makes me want to put it on my must do bucket list. After a day of sightseeing all I want to do is sleep but you are up viewing photos and getting a amazing blog off to us. Can't wait for tomorrows.

Thanks
I spend the last 30 minutes of the day writing the blog, it really helps me to wind down from the busy day. It helps me get to sleep, but also the cause of many typos.

Did any personnel ever show up at the motel? Odd way to run a business... Gorgeous scenery- wow.

Motel
This little motel had about 8 rooms and was in the woods by a river, not much else around it but a gas station. It was really no problem, just very unusual for us. I think in Newfoundland they think nothing of leaving a room unlocked. And I really didn't think twice about going into the room. The room was actually pretty nice, had a kitchenette, etc.

What did we miss on the 'private' TV? Imagine what gets imagined.

Not sure what you're referring to (private TV) but I'm pretty tired. Oh, Donna, Liam looked so much like Mac in that last photo. Adorable.

Thanks
Thanks for all the nice comments. We still have 16 more days to go and we wish we'd planned for more time, especially here in Newfoundland.
