Golden, Kelowna, Vancouver - Colombie Britannique

Je me sens bien petite !

Je me suis réveillée à 07h30 !

Walk in the ghost town

Golden, Kelowna, Vancouver - British Columbia

Days 24 to 28

Day 24 - Tuesday, July 23, Golden

I arrive in Golden at 6:00 pm. The last part of the trip is a bit intimidating. I'm driving through the mountains and through rock. There are a lot of curves, and ups and downs. I feel small! I see more and more big trucks, many with a load of cut trees.

The change from Alberta to BC is made without any warning. No big sign welcoming people! I have to take a picture of a sign posted at the Information Center. By the way, at the information center, the young man who gives me information speaks French and he insiste on speaking it. He tells me that I'm lucky that he was there as he is the only one than can speak French. 😊 But, it is true that his French was pretty good for someone who learned it on the school benches.

I notice, on the way, that there are no more bilingual road signs.

I settle in my room and then go out to get a pizza at the local pizzeria. Golden is a quaint little town.

Tomorrow, Kelowna.

Day 25 - Wednesday, July 24, Kelowna

I get back on the road to go to Kelowna. More mountains, but they are more and more covered with trees. A lot of dark
cabine - cabincabine - cabincabine - cabin

cabine du trappeur - trapper's cabin
green!

I stop to visit a ghost town at Thre Valley Lake! Very nice! It's very hot! I see more and more lakes where people go for a swim or sail on a boat.

I arrive in the city of Kelowna around 4:00 pm. I jump in the pool and then, read on my Kindle by the pool. No more running around today.

Day 26 - Thurday, July 25 , Kelowna

I wanted to sleep late this morning but I woke up at 7:30 am! I stay in bed until 9:30 and then, got up for a drive in the country. I go on a guided tour at the Mission Hill Winery, which includes a visit in the cave where all the wine barrels are and there is also a wine tasting. Very interesting! This winery is high on a hill, hence the name, and the houses there are beautiful and, most of all, each house has a beautiful garden. It's the smell of wealth! Then, I go see the Summerhill Pyramid where they make sparkling wines.

Did you know that there are always roses in a vineyard? It's not only for their beauty but also to detect diseases that might affect the vines. The symptoms appear faster on the roses and the vineyard manager can take action before it's too late. It's at Niagara on the Lake that I learned this a few years ago. Our guide forgot to tell us about it. 😊

On the way back to the hotel, I stop to eat a good cherry ice cream cone at a cherry picking place (Suncity cherries) and I return to my room to rest. It's a heat wave outside!

It's nice not to drive a long distance and not do too much. 😊

Day 27 - Friday, July 26, Surrey (Vancouver)

I get on the road for Vancouver around 10:30am. You've certainly noticed by now that I'm not an early riser. I do wake up early, between 6:30-7:30 but I can't seem to be able to move on until 10:00 am or so. 😊 From Kelowna, I take the HWY 97C, then the 5W and finally, back on the 1W, at Hope. A boring trip, no stops anywhere even if I'm sure that there are nice things to see along the way. At Hope, I do stop for a half-hour rest in a rest area.

Naturally, I didn't really think things through and I arrived near Vancouver at rush hour. There were a lot of traffic but since I'm not going to Vancouver per se, everything goes well. I even think that the hotel is pretty far away, in Surrey. But the owner of the hotel informs me that there is a Skytrain station not far from here, at about 7km. I'm really happy about that. I will be able to park my car there and take the train for the city tomorrow. About 30-40 minutes, no hassle! I would like to go to Stanley Park, and for the rest, I'm not sure. Maybe a little shopping.

After checking in my room, I go out to explore, have dinner at the Swiss Chalet and do a little grocery shopping for my breakfasts and snacks.

It's now 9:30 pm. I'm stopping everything, and I'm watching a movie. Oh, and by the way, I hate air conditioning when the cold air hits you directly. Brrrr!

See ya!

Day 28 - Saturday, July 26, Vancouver

Today, Vancouver city! I take the Skytrain late this morning and get to Waterfront (45 minutes), take a few pictures and decide to take a bus tour around the city, The Red Bus. It makes many stops and we can hop on and off as we wish. We go to Stanley Park and drive all around. Very interesting! I get off the bus on Robson St, the place to shop. Very nice! Once my shopping done, I get back on the tour bus to finish the tour. We pass Chinatown, Gastown and get back to Waterfront.

From there, I walk a bit to take a regular bus to go to Kitsilano. Thadée, a friend of a friend, that I met in Quebec, is owner of the restaurant the Rangoon (http://www.rangoonkits.com) with his burmese wife. She is the cook and he is the host and waiter. Thadée speaks 9 languages and is Polish. He worked at the Club Aventure, a travel agency when living in Quebec. He was happy to see me and remembered meeting me. I eat a very good butter chicken with spicy Curry sauce! Thadée offers me wine, twice. A nice white wine like I like ti. 😊 For dessert, a Polish cheese cake! Mmm! During the meal, I talk a good while with a couple from Vancouver, Diana and Bill, who are sitting right next to my table. Very nice people.

At 8:00 pm, I leave because I have a bus and the Skytrain to ride because getting to my hotel. I am pretty tired of my day, but happy. Vancouver is a very nice city and I'm sure that there are many other things to do. I would've love to see more of it. I get to my car at 9:15 pm.

Tomorrow, leaving for Port Alberni.

R.I.P.

• Bonne continuation !
