I camped two nights in Yoho. The whole time I was there I kept singing the "Pirates of the Caribbean" song, "yoho yoho a pirate's life for me," though I was more likely to sing the church camp version to the same tune, "yoho yoho a Christian's life for me. Praise God from whom all blessings flow, praise God all creatures here below, praise God above ye heavenly hosts, Creator, Christ, and HO-ly Ghost. Yoho yoho.... etc." The first day, Monday, I drove up to Takakkaw Falls and hiked a bit up Yoho Valley. The second day, the 18th, I went to Emerald Lake, iconic Canadian Rockies lake, and hiked up to Emerald Basin. This was a much more substantial hike, climbing steeply up from the valley floor and wandering up and down over a trail ... read more

Wow... We finally made it to Yoho National Park and the Lake O'Hara area. It's been on our list of things to do for two years and every time we've gone to try and book some accommodation we've been disappointed to find out that everything was booked solid - even the camp sites... We had to get there before it closed for hiking, and before we left... Unfortunately our only option to explore the area was the day-hike option. We thought we'd try and use Charlotte's connections again (which have worked for two years without fail - from heli-skiing, to white water rafting, NHL hockey tickets, dog sledding, helicopter flights, to name but a few - all for free.. What can i say I've been living the dream for 2 years). And what do you now, ... read more

Although we are staying in Banff NP we took a day trip to Yoho NP which is on the other side of the continental divide. The main attractions are the spiral rail tunnels, Takakkawa Falls, and Emerald Lake. The spiral tunnels are a bypass of the old railway grade that was ultra steep and very unsafe. With the spiral tunnels the trains actually go through two spiral tunnels in the mountain. You can actually see the engine exiting the tunnel while the rest of the cars are still entering the other hole (right below it!). No trains were nearby when we were at the viewpoint though. We then headed over to Tukakkawa falls which is the 3rd highest falls in the canadian rockies (800+ feet tall). The hike to the falls was only 1/2 mile which ... read more

Up bright and early for a big day today, our first stop was Mt. Revelstoke. We drove most of the way up the mountain and did a small hike to reach the summit which offered us incredible views of the Canadian landscape, absolutely stunning. We met with the other trek group and got some group photos at the top then continued on with our hike. We had some amazing views of the landscape and could see many towns and rivers, after all we were over 6000ft high. We headed back down to the van and continued on driving. We had a lunch stop at a place called Roger’s Pass which didn’t have much more than a visitors centre, a small hotel, a diner (which had amazing wedges!) and a gift shop. We took a while browsing ... read more

After getting off the Vancouver ferry, both Sara and I were spent. The long days of kayaking and excessive salt intake had both of us ready for a break. But since we didn’t want to get stuck in Vancouver morning traffic, we decided to fight through afternoon traffic instead. We made it to Chilliwack, British Columbia, about halfway across and close to the US border. After significant hassle caused by RV only “camping”, we found a campground with both of our requirements: showers and laundry. A third preference, mosquito-free, was not met, but we made the best of it and got ready for the hiking portion of the trip. A good night’s sleep helped get us going early the next morning for a 7 hour drive to Yoho National Park. Uneventful best describes the drive, ... read more
