For the second day in a row I am up at 6am, wide awake after just5-6 hours of sleep. Gotta love jet lag! My first full day in Vancouver was very enjoyable. A. and I grabbed a vegetarian/vegan breakfast at a little café called Naam and then spent the rest of the morning walking along the beach, which looked a lot like Cape Town. Not quite as picturesque, but definitely resembled the South African coast with the beach and the mountains in the background. Beautiful, nonetheless. The weather was a perfect mid-70s. We then stocked up on fresh produce and such and headed back to her apartment for a whole foods lunch. At that point I crashed into a peaceful nap until her friend L. arrived, who is also staying here at A.’s apartment for the ... read more

So flight to vancouver was ok, watched some old sifi horror somthing called "gate 7" and inkheart aircanada now has lil Tv's built into the backs of all the seats so that was a great distraction of how cramped and num our legs and bum became. Sooo plane lands, we grab our stuff, and cab it over to the UBC. We got a nice room at the university on the cheap. for some reason tho the beds were like 8 feet from the floor and very narrow (just dont roll over in your sleep or your done) so its still early morning at this point, so we grab some food off some campus restaurants then just walk allong the campus boundries. we come accroos a nice couple heading out for a pickapica, and they proceed to ... read more

Hello Again! Today was a great day. Three of my friends and I went on an extended beach tour. We began our journey with a two hour walk to Spanish Banks beach and then to Loncardo beach. The water there was amazing. They have sand bars that you can continue walking on for what seems to be forever. The sand was so soft on our feet. Then we decided to park it for a bit and catch the rays. After this we continued our hike and made it to Jericho beach and Kitsilano Beach. I had a nice 45 minute nap on the beach while my friends went into the huge pool there. I was too cheap to pay for the entry fee (5.15). Haha. Well, enjoy all of the photos! I am still wide awake ... read more

well it's about 24 hours til we head to the airport. we've had a great year but are both very knackered and ready to come home. we're really looking forward to seeing everyone again. the other night i had a dream that conor, triona's nephew had grown an extra 3 feet while we were away and was towering over the both of us. i wonder if it was a premonition. seattle was great, got to see barca beating man u. watched it in a packed irish pub at lunchtime. had a few pints, made fun of man utd fans and then moved from our hostel to a cheaper hotel just outside the city. the next day we visited the music and sci-fi museum beside the space needle. there was a jim henson exhibition that was on, ... read more

Bonjour Mes Amies! How are you all doing? I miss everyone so much and am really happy that you are all reading and enjoying my blogs. This blog is an update on my new found perspective and love of Wreck Beach and it's evenings. The sunsets here are incredible, in fact, they are said to be one of the best places to view the sunset (mom, you would just love it). The atmosphere is much less intimidating than during the day - there are fewer people (99% of whom are clothed), the beach is beautiful and the sunset is amazing. I really enjoyed seeing a variety of people doing all different activities. Some were there with loved ones sitting or walking the beach, other's were skim boarding along the water's edge while a mass amount of ... read more

Well, the day has finally arrived - my sister, Nancy, and I jet off to Rome (via Frankfurt) this afternoon at 4:40. No, I haven't finished packing, but I have prepaid bills, changed my phone message, added the "out of office" auto reply to my email and handed all work-related business to my friend and colleague, Sue. Anything I forget to pack can be bought - or just ignored. We're all very excited about our Excellent Adventure...and hopefully I will be able to find time to add to this blog as we travel....stay tuned!... read more

Alright then! Well I was lying here and I just realized that I'm actually supposed to be doing overseas, that it is actually happening. And it made me think that I better get going, so I figured I'd start this now to see if it's the kick in the ass I need. Let's just start with things to do. - Select volunteer organization in Nepal, email, confirm date and any information - Get vaccinations - Figure out which countries to see in SE Asia - Fix backpacks Lots of other stuff.... read more

Hej Allihopa! GB & BC... read more

I can't believe it has been a year since our last big adventure - Africa. I don't think driving around Ontario and Cape Cod (as pretty as they were) counts as a big adventure, do you? This seven week trip will take us the length of Vietnam and into Cambodia, using every means of transportation going: trains, planes, automobiles, tuk tuks and cyclos. Although we will be travelling by ourselves we did get some advice from our son Martin (a Destination Specialist with Adventures Abroad). Common sense would have seen us stay home and save our pennies but I don't think anyone has ever accused us of having an abundance of common sense. This trip was planned and partly paid for before the economy took a serious down turn. We looked at each other and said ... read more
