I'd always wanted to check out Bowen Island, so was pleasantly surprised when Kenny booked a night over there. Only 20 minutes on the ferry from horseshoe bay meant a nice short journey there. The island is a real little getaway from the daily hustle and bustle and our b&b was a real little hidden gem. The island is tiny and explored pretty easily. Our accommodation was overlooking Kilarney lake, so we went for a wander around the lake, enjoyed watching the humming birds drink water from outside our room and the eagles soaring over the lake. The village was a tiny street, but the restaurants were pleasant and buzzing, and there was a seafood festival in the restaurant we ate in. Sunday morning, after a delicious organic breakfast in our b&b we decided to head ... read more

This entry by Sarah. Well our hotel couldnt really be in a better place - 5 minutes walk one way to the incredible Stanley park, and right at one end of Robson Street, the 'fashion' street of Vancouver. I can't see me doing much of that though with four boys in tow! Any way I am loving being in the middle of such an interesting and vibrant -area and being able to walk everywhere, and we are also close to the famous Skyrail commuter system to get you to most of the major suburbs. The city itself is beautiful - trees have been thoughtfully planted in amongst the hustle and bustle, and the skyscrapers are magnificent in their height and lit up at night they make a striking picture. We ventured out to start looking at ... read more

DAY 6: Sunday 18th April 2010 - JASPER / TRAIN (by Darryl) Gee this train travel is great, its very relaxing - I could stare out the window all day (and I have), the scenery is spectacular along this leg of the trip. I’ve taken so many photos of rugged mountains capped with snow, fir trees, iced over lakes, boulder rivers etc that would keep a calendar company going for a few centuries! They’ll probably look all the same when I look at them later but nevermind. I’m typing this on the train as the boys sleep, and Sarah reads her book, but back to the start: This morning we decided to feed up large and have a big breakfast at the Hotel restaurant - to keep us going for most of the day. Buffet for ... read more

So, where did I leave off last time??? That's right, I was packing my things up to go to my hostel. The next morning, I checked out of my nice hotel, left my bags there for the day and went for a wonder around the city. I have been told by Troy to stay away from Hastings and Maine Rds if I want to live, lol. I did honestly take the warning seriously, so you could understand that I was quite shocked when I found myself accidently on these roads on my walk. I wanted to go to Gastown, but took the wrong road. So when I saw these ferel looking skanks walking the street and drunks being kicked out of pubs, I looked at the street sign and realised where I was, freaked out and ... read more

Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at 8:09pm Hola, bonjour, hey everyone! Finally settling in to life here in vancouver. Things are so different! Kilometers, celsius, loonies, and toonies are some new things that I'm learning about. And yes, people say "eh" a ton. I already say "for sure" but mine is more valley girl ... read more

We enjoyed watching the Men's Figure Skating Finals from Doolin's Irish Pub last night, surrounded by fun-loving Canadians and Americans. . . .Yay U.S.A! This morning, Team Turquoise left early, at about 4:00am . . . armed with signs, pins, flags etc. We were on a mission to see Matt Lauer and the rest of the Today Show gang and to get on T.V. After taking a very fast taxi ride up to Grouse Mountain, followed by a Gondola ride up to where the Today show is broadcasting from, the team accomplishd most of their goals. We met and had our pictures taken with Matt and Meredith and Ann but we think only Susie was shown on air. Oh well so much for our 15 minutes of fame . . . Tonight we are trying to ... read more

Rainy Monday Today was a pretty uneventful day. We got up early (7am is early for me) and David put his stuff together and headed to the Canadian Passport Office to renew his passport. It only took a couple hours to get it done and should have it ready by Thursday which is great since I'm flying on Friday. Good timing. The weather was quite terrible so I went back to the room to get some laptop time and work on the blog as you might have noticed (shout out to Vincent for his help). The upside of all the rain is that D got to test his Arc'terix jacket and it works real good. He was dry the whole way...can't say the same for the jeans though but that's another matter. By 1300 the rain ... read more

Dear Family and Friends, My smart son Derek has just set me up with this blog on my brand new notebook computer and it is coming with me on our travels. You don't have to read my drival but I have put your name down to receive my ramblings as I ramble. I have caught a nasty chest bug from "other son" James and while I've coped with the day to day here I am not in good form. Thank god for such riveting tennis and catching up with Derek and his friends. So I am looking forward to leaving all this behind and setting out on our adventures. The flight alone is going to be a test of endurance . The weather is said to imnprove for the weekend and I'm sure you will all ... read more

Hello! So I haven't written one of these blogs in a while, maybe it's because I haven't had a reason to since I stayed at home for the summer, but fear not! I am on the brink of my next trip! I'm actually flying away in about 6 hours to Bangkok, Thailand via Hong Kong and will be traveling around SE Asia with my friend Max for 4 months. Sadly this means you'll be hearing a lot less from Peter in these blogs, he's off to the 'real world' of work and school, and I get to have all the fun. Unlike the epic Eurotrip with Peter, this one features less countries and a lot less plans. I'm flying into Bangkok and I have 2 days of exploring before Max shows up and then the plan ... read more

So I survived my first time flying by myself. I felt extremely nervous about there being no one there to keep me distracted since I don’t really enjoy flying but two movies and one episode of The Office later I was in Vancouver airport and my cousin was running up to me and giving me a hug. We headed straight for downtown since it was the grand finale of the Festival of Lights and it was China’s turn to perform. Basically there are a bunch of countries that put on a fireworks show synchronized to predetermined music. We were on a bridge overseeing the fireworks so we vaguely heard the music but from what we gathered from other’s opinions the next day it was spectacular and had the Kung Fu fighting song at the end. ... read more
