The Global Scavengers Its a Global Scavenger Hunt
Well, the adventure is about to begin. My mother (Sandy) and I (Leslie) have decided to be wild and crazy and go around the world....in 23 days.
Shortly after Christmas, while reading the Times Colonist travel section, we saw an interesting article about a travel adventure; it was called the Great Escape. It is a trip that sends us around the world - 10 countries and 4 continents, in 23 days. The entire time, we are working in a team of two, deciphering riddles, performing tasks, and collecting points. The team with the most points at the end of the trip, is crowned the World's Greatest Traveller, and wins the trip for free next year. Together, we decided that this may be just the adventure we were looking for and decided to apply. Two weeks later we had been accepted and were sitting in our kitchen in shock over what we had gotten ourselves into. Needless to say, after dotting our i's and crossing our t's, we are now looking at a week before departure and more excited than ever.
The adventure is also referred to as a Blind Date with the world
because we don't know where we are going, until we get there. We do know that we leave from San Francisco and we arrive back in Toronto. Additionally, due to toursit visa requirements, we also know what we are going to China, but have no idea where in China. Other than that, the rest is a mystery.
Are you thinking to yourself, what they heck are these crazy ladies going to be doing....well, we are not sure, but some past scavenges have been:
Ride a four-legged beast around one of the Seven Wonders of the World wearing a traditional Arab galabyia and headdress purchased in Khan al-Khalili. (Shop in Cairo’s ancient Grand Bazaar before riding a camel at the Pyramids.)
At this World Heritage Site there are over 50 temples, visit the one where rodents roam freely and explain why? (In Kathmandu visit the sacred Hiranya Varna Mahabihar aka Rat Temple, where the living guardian of Vishnu lives and is guarded by the holy rodents.)
Sing “Feelings” at a Ginza district karaoke bar with at least four other
local patrons. (Tune up your pipes with new friends in glitzy Tokyo!)
In the ‘City of Waters,’ partake in a traditional Turkish delight. (Take a
bath in a public bathhouse.)
We are looking at the adventure like a buffet of the world. After the intensity of this trip, we will be very full, but when we are ready for another round, we know what dishes we don't like and which ones really impressed us. Aside from that, we are really looking forward to meeting the different people that this adventure has attracted. There are approximately 20 teams of two, comprised of people who have applied from all over the world. This is a great chance to make some really good friends and just have a blast.
