We work very hard and actually too many hours with Kevin, so he urges us to finally go and experience the island a little bit.
Tofino is our destination but as always we start late in the day and therefore it gets dark pretty quick. We decide to stay at the coast and find a place next to the water. Easier said than done. All along the coast are houses and long private properties. We drive very far up the coast, on very dark gravel roads only to realize, that we have a better chance in the little village Qualicum Beach. So finally we drive back there and find a spot where we can have breakfast on the water front the next morning.
At Port Alverni we pass the last houses and gas station, but our tank is half full, so we keep on driving
This time we don’t start so late and are determent to make it to Tofino.
At a little parking area we stop to go down to the lake. It is totally worth it. Just Beautiful!
For Lunch Diego wants to make a fire, so we get off the road and stop
by the river. Unfortunately it has been raining during the night and all the wood Diego finds is very wet. He tries anyway. He burns through a lot of paper towels and wet pine tree needles but it is impossible to keep the flame alive. Finally Elisa has a delicious luncDiego has to give up. Only for this time though. He will try again!
After Lake Sproat the Low gas indicator starts blinking.
The road is long and windy but surrounded by beautiful nature. Kennedy Lake was worth a picture, but the road doesn’t allow stopping. There is just no space.
That is what makes what comes now all the more scary.
Diego keeps on looking at the meter for the gas. We get closer and closer to running out of petrol, and there is no gas station in sight! We look at the map and realize, that we have still have a long drive, about 50 km, ahead of us.
The meter shows three bars, then two and we are still very far from Tofino. We get so nervous. What happens if we get stuck on the road here. No space to park anywhere!
And it gets worse because the road starts to be very windy and goes up and down. So now when we do stop it is even dangerous for us and everyone else. We are so scared but we have no other choice. We have to keep on driving. The meter shows only one bar and we are still not at the crossroad to Tofino.
But we get there and the sign says that there will be a gas station in both directions, Tofino and Ucluelet. So we decide to drive to Tofino. That was the wrong decision though. We drive and drive through a National Park. No Gas station only forest and beaches. The meter shows no more bars! We expect to stutter to a halt any moment. We keep on driving. And finally we see some houses and … a gas station. We made it!! With the last drops of petrol!!
Oh we are soooooo happy and relieved. We never want to experience such a situation again! Diego buys a 10l Gasoline canister in the same Gas station.
