Wszystkie kosze ... read more

Plans, plans, plans. The best ones, as they say, often don't turn out properly. I had thought to check out the whale watching opportunities in Campbell River. I had also chatted with the lady who ran the campground there and she had suggested that I could go and see the local museum. But when I got up and started in to town to do those things, I came upon Elk Falls Provincial Park. And I wanted to see the falls. So I headed in there and then did the little walk to the viewpoint. But the viewpoint was oriented in such a way that it wasn't all that impressive. I went back to the parking lot and I was going to head on in to town, but then I saw another trail. I felt like the ... read more

During the night I spent at Qualicum Bay, I was online and showing my photo of the bald eagle from Pacific Rim area. I ended up being contacted by someone I used to work with in the casino. She invited me to come and visit, but I didn't have any contact information for them. I left her a message to let me know. By the morning, I hadn't heard anything, but I decided to give her some time to get in touch. That meant I was going to need something to keep me occupied for a while as I waited. Nearby Qualicum Bay is a place called Horne Lake Provincial Park. There are caves there and so I decided to go and have a look. When I arrived, I found there were three caves in the ... read more

As the day ends we watch the tide slowly wash away the products of the day - sand castles melting away under the persistent rising water, removing away all residue and reminders of the days activities. It's the perfect metaphor. Awakening to a new day, a new beach and a new start. Rathrevor Beach Provincial Park is incredible; I would have never imagined that such an endless expanse of sandy beach existed anywhere this far north along the west coast. The shallow shelf allow what feels like miles of exposed shoreline to appear every day as the water recedes. It was an entirely unplanned stop. The original 'plan' was to leave Point-no-Point and zig-zag a path across the island out to Tofino, but Andras spotted a one-page article on Rathrevor in one of the magazines at ... read more

Since I last blogged (is that an acceptable verb?), I've been across the Island to the Pacific Rim National Park and back. I left Nanaimo on Friday and headed west towards Port Alberni. Quick stops on the way at Little Qualicum Falls (great place) and Cathedral Grove (lots of big trees - it was about as exciting as it sounds). Very twisty roads, but I'm getting used to the driving the van now. Port Alberni itself is technically a sea port, but is about 30 miles inland. It sits at the head of a long narrow inlet. Quite a nice, if somewhat functional, little town: and yet another one with a great big industrial plant in the middle of it. The snow-capped mountains surrounding the town made up for its shortcomings - as did the fantastic ... read more

Sharon: Can't believe we made it here! Last update, we were sitting in Scott's hotel in Kamloops, tired and sore (I'm pretty sure the injuries on my bottom are what most people would call "saddle sores") and completely oblivious to the mountain ranges we were going to be confronting the next day. And I thought the Rockies were the force to be dealt with! We started off day 11 by pushing our bikes up the formidable hill that makes up the other side of the valley in Kamloops - it only took us, say, maybe 3 hours! Ugh. Whoever commented that we were going to have massive leg muscles but no arm muscles to mention after such a long bike trip should really try pushing a rather heavy bike loaded with close to 100 pounds of ... read more
