Sharon: This blog entry doesn't really fit in with the rest.... as we haven't been cycling for over THREE days. Our bums are getting lonesome without their trusty bike seats to rest on. We got to my Grandma and Grandpa's house on Vancouver Island on Wednesday in the POURING rain. It rained - and it rained - and it rained - all day long. Turns out our amazing waterproof gear is only water proof in Alberta! To be fair, it did hold up pretty well - but after four or five hours of saturation we were bound to get a bit wet. Unfortunately, my spur of the moment running shoe purchase (after losing my favourite pair) was not such a great idea for the wet coastal weather, as the shoes have "vents" at the front - ... read more

5 days of peace and quiet, on a farm outside of courtney was just what we needed, and felt almost sad to come back to the city of Vancouver. We skied on Mount Washington, in fresh powder one day, walked around looking for truffles in the owner's "backyard", ate beautifull food and drank good wine. Here are some photos of our christmas on Vancouver Island. ... read more

My family have left now, which is sad, but on the bright side, Jono’s parents will be here soon. That’s how we humans get by, more like amphibians than humans, jumping from one lilly of excitement to the next, before sadness, loss and emptiness can drench us. It was great to have mum, dad and my lil’ sista around. The time went too quickly though, and now I miss them even more! The last week went especially fast, as I was working for most of it. Jono got back from his field trip on Wednesday, which meant he had the chance to share a few meals with the McConnachie clan. I have included a few of his photos, just because they are so good, but I’ll let him fill in the details. The landscape looks amazing ... read more

Waking up to a rainy day with a car out the front of the house is entirely different to waking up to a rainy day and looking mournfully/wistfully at a 10 year-old gortex jacket that does not really work any more. Actually, maybe I’ll put a new rain jacket on my MEC employee shopping list. But, anyway, my point is, we had a car and we planned to use every last one of our “free” kilometres that came with it. So the fact that it was raining on our third day on the island did not deter us. We just hopped in the car and went on a road trip to explore the island. We decided to head up towards Gold River, through Strathcona Provincial Park. Stopping via Miracle beach, elk river falls and a ... read more

Day two, which was, despite the date at the top of this entry, Sunday the 3rd June: After a slightly frustrating start to the day looking for a particular trail in a particular national park, and finding only housing developments, we went back to bed and tried getting out the other side and starting again. It was a good move. We drove (yep, DROVE, woo-hoo) out to the other side of Comox Lake in search of that seam of basalt we spied the day before. Let me intersect a crucial piece of information here: I mentioned that we spent some savings and you might be wondering what we actually spent money on, since we were staying in someone's house for free and not exactly dining out in five star eatery's. Well, we got brave and ... read more

Finally we pulled some strings, spent some savings, swapped some shifts and both got four days off together to head out to Vancouver Island. One of the things on my ‘must do’ list while in Canada was to visit my cousin Colin and his fiancé Julie (http://www.angusadventures.com/index.htm.) The two have recently just completed the first entirely human-powered circumnavigation of the globe. I first met Colin when he sailed in to Australia somewhere close to 15 years ago. His adventurous spirit had inspired my budding one, and left a big impression on me. Meeting up with him again was very exciting. Unfortunately Colin and Julie are very busy and very popular people. They are currently still doing talks and presentations from their last adventure, planning a wedding, a honey moon and a next adventure while running ... read more

Well this is far over due but I've been having a blast and the internet costs over here are not exactly thr same as Asia and NZ. I was lucky enough to meet a girl from Vancouver island while in Thailand and she offered me a place to stay. She picked me up from the airport in a wicked Jeep and we took the ferry to the island. It looks pretty small on the map but infact its almost as big as the UK. She lived in a mansion in Comox near Courtenay. I had my own condo and got fed like a king by her fascinating Swiss parents. I loved the indoor pool with the one way current so you dont have to do laps but nothing like I enjoyed the heated toilet seats. Not ... read more
