(Jack is singing) Happy Birthday to me. Today I turned 63. I'm cruising through Canada And I saw a lot of tree(s). (tune by Patty and Mildred J. Hill) And many of the trees that I saw today were dead or dying due to the Mountain Pine Beetle. The infestation is MASSIVE and can be seen almost everywhere in this part of British Columbia. In years past the beetles would largely die out in the winter, but due to changing weather patterns (i.e. global warming), the beetles are surviving the winters and multiplying each year. All they need is one good, cold winter to slow them down. For now, all they can do is cut the dead trees as soon as possible (to salvage the lumber) and then replant new seedlings. It's hard to see in ... read more

*** CLICK ON PHOTO TO ENLARGE *** *** TO VIEW MY PREVIOUS BLOGS, SCROLL DOWN & CLICK 'PREVIOUS JOURNALS'*** I know that I have only just sent a blog, but I have found a really good internet access point that is free, so I am taking the opportunity to update you on the latest goings on. Sorry if this is too much for you all to take in, but it helps rest my weary legs whilst I put these together. Prince George to Vanderhoof - 125km 9 hrs in the saddle On the advice of a number of people in Prince George, I have purchased some bear mace. Apparently the chances of a bear encounter (both Grizzly and/or Black/Brown) now increases significantly as I make my way Northwest along the Yellowhead Highway 16, so it ... read more

Snowshoeing on Evelyn Moutain A good friend and myself took our annual spring trip to Hidden Valley. It was a beautiful day looking at the blue sky with a light wind blowing. We snowmobiled the first 8 miles to the head of the trail where we were dropped off. We continued up steep pitch hills/mountains they seemed with a cover of approx 8 inches of fresh snow. It was a tough climb until the legs aclimatized. Once we had been hiking for about 1 1/2 hr the level of the ground got a little better. After a rest we continued the next three hours treking up the mountain. We got to the top of the little valley where our cabin lay nestled amoung huge snow cornices. We could only see the top of the outhouse ... read more

Finally, here's my big summer trip for 2006. Sarah, Sonya and I had been talking about a road trip to the Yukon since New Year's; we didn't actually make it to the Yukon but we did get as far as southern Alaska. The girls flew into Calgary on July 4, and the next day we loaded up my van and off we went. Here's the day-to-day summary of the trip if you want the details. If not, just check out the pictures: Day 1 - Calgary to Columbia Icefield, Athabasca Glacier. Stopped at Banff town and Lake Louise. Camped at the Icefield campsite. A chilly night. Day 2 - Athabasca Glacier to Jasper town along the Icefields Parkway. Some spectacular views. Along the way, we hiked to the Athabasca Glacier, checked out Tangle Falls, Athabasca Falls, ... read more

I have never really defined myself as "American", just a person, nothing more or less. i guess I would say Scottish if asked (and when not asked!!) I didn't really think I had any stand out defining "American" traits or qualities. I WAS WRONG. I realize I am getting a little ahead of myself here, but as I'm sitting in a parking lot of Whistler writing this, I'm feeling more than home sick and out of sorts. It all started with the price of gas, then not being able to figure out how fast I was going on the highway, or how far away things were! Never mind the whole exchanging money thing! Once I first realized how much of my own little American world I lived in I had to keep reminding myself to close ... read more
