Rob biking at Myra-Bellevue Park. Burnt trees and under growth. We haven't been very good!
Sorry about the length of time from the last blog. We have got into the work, work, work,.. regime.
Since we last wrote we have been working hard and trying to save our pennies and loonies. Rob had a job interview at Parks Canada (similar to D.O.C for those in the know) which he felt went well. For the interview we had a weekend in Kelowna which is about 3-4hrs west and south. We spent some coin in the massive (!) second clothing shop and found an interview outfit for about $30. Kelowna was beautiful and dry in comparison to Revy. It is sheltered between the mountains to the west and east. On the first day we went for a nice bike in Myra-Bellevue Park. It had been ravaged by fire in 2003 and was an eerie scene of burnt tree stumps about 3m high and regeneration under. We chased a small grass snake into the bush and startled a few mule and white-tailed deer. On the second day, Rob decided he needed to do something different, so we went for a bike along an old railway. Myra Canyon trail is about 12km each way and
Myra-Bellevue Park
View from the top of the hill. has 18 wooden trestles of various lengths and heights. The trail is about 7 miles long however it is only 1 mile in a direct line across the valley. Many of the trestles were destroyed in a forest fire in 2003 and restored in the past few years.

On the drive up to the start of the track we saw another black bear foraging and a very scared moose.
We have been exploring our "home" town when we have single days off. While in Kelowna, a small 2 person inflatable boat, oars and a pump was purchased. We often blow it up after work and float around in the many lakes in the area. Echo lake is a favourite overnight spot, and the Upper Arrow lake below Revy has large fish cruising in the shallows and turtles (which we have yet to find). We have been back up Mt Revelstoke again, this time by foot not bike. We didn't make it to the top (yet!) as there is still snow, but we can;t wait. Apparently the wild flowers are gorgeous! We also hung out at Blanket creek and Martha creek, walking, reading, relaxing, biking and playing
Mule deer
2 cuteys looking at us. with the ground squirrels! See photos of squirrels and my knarly fall from my bike!
Our recent weekend was spent down in Nelson, a small, hippy-ish town 4 hours south. The town has 73 maintained trails for mountain bikes and Rob was drooling. We had a nice ride up the Mountain Station tracks, however my hard-tail (and brain) did not enjoy the down very much! We cruised along another railway road and went for a quick dip in a lake. We headed out of Nelson for the evening and stayed on the Forest service road that we drove up the next day to go for a great stomp at Kokanee Glacier Park. It was nice to be up in the mountains above-ish the bush line. We had a lovely moment with a young ground squirrel which licked the potato chip salt off our fingers. We headed home via Kaslo, another beautiful lake side town fully of mining and forestry history, some still living there!
Work has been work. I am working in the office, answering the phones, checking emails and helping customers with their RV and tenting needs. I also have the great task of cleaning the "washrooms"
Trestles
A big trestle on the Myra Canyon railway. and office, laundry and shop. Rob has been lawn mowing, chain-sawing trees, weed-eating, cleaning the campground, sorting rubbish and recycling, security and fire-bundle cutting and assembling. We are saving our money so that we can go to the USA.
Our plans: work here and save as much as possible until mid/end September, then head east to Alberta via Banff and Jasper. Visit friends in Edmonton and then head south to Calgary and into USA. Then mountain bike, snow-shoe, snowboard, walk, cruise the chad machine into Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and then back up Arizona, California, Oregon, Washington and then out from Vancouver in mid January.
Hope all good in NZ, stay warm xox
