Kelowna is the third largest city in BC. It is two hours away from Kamloops, also located in a semi-arid ecosystem. Kelowna is famous for its award wining wineries. During this trip, we visited the Mission Hill Winery and a Kangaroo Farm located near Vernon. The purpose of our trip was to see a neighbouring city in a similar geographical environment but with a different economic focus. Through observations, I found Kelowna very tourism dependant city, and in the suburban regions, it is also agricultural and forestry based. The people here are similar to the people in Kamloops, demonstrating a lot of characteristics of a true Canadian. The cultural diversity in these two cities are similar, I find them to have great opportunities to develop into bigger cities in the future, as Vancouver becomes more unaffordable. ... read more

Geo: 49.8868, -119.497Today we flew from Kelowna to Calgary with a short layover before flying onto Gatwick, London, England aboard WestJet Airlines. We were delayed leaving Calgary due to an electrical storm in the area. Our flight was not full so one of us was able to snag three empty seats and sleep most the way! WestJet is pretty basic; it offered no meal service unless you purchased it, plus you had to have your own tablet or rent one to for entertainment. The plane was pretty old and tired. Otherwise, the flight was uneventful. ... read more

Geo: 49.8868, -119.497Through my countless lifetimes of hard living, I've had the good fortune of traveling everywhere there is to see in the world, so trust me - I know a beautiful place when I find one. For me, Kelowna and its surrounding area paint one of the loveliest landscapes you'll ever see; all those picturesque vineyards dotting the shores of Okanagan Lake are perfect locations for some wining and dining, my favourite activities whenever visiting the area - but not this time! I'm here to celebrate my boy's wedding! Sadly, I wasn't actually invited to Pat's wedding, because the special bond that we share elicits an uncontrollable and inexplicable jealous rage in Benita. But rage be damned, as there's no way in hell I'm missing the party, so I crashed it! It's exactly what I ... read more

Hello again! Well this update is about my time in Kelowna, where I was for about a week. This entry wont be too long as I was enjoying relaxing and not doing too much (or anything much) in the sunshine. First thing I found was that it was HOT! I arrived into Kelowna at 9am off another over night bus, and it was already almost 30 degrees. In my new hostel I met some lovely new hostel friends and had a very deep conversation about life and the universe and the conversation continued along that team. Now even though most days were at least 32 degrees I did go exploring and I found some wildlife, and I climbed a small mountain. However I didn't take too many photos, as I went to the beach most days ... read more

What decision would you make if you found yourself in the situation I am about to tell you about? Many thoughts crossed my mind as I pondered this decision and depending which way you look at it, I'm not sure if the decision paid off or not. I will let you be the judge of that! Before I get into this story, I must first tell you about my Sunday from 2 weeks ago where a typical relaxing Sunday turned into one of activities and adventure. This Sunday was the day of the Calgary Marathon. I probably could have or even should have entered the 5km, 10km or maybe even the half marathon categories for this event but instead I decided to go for a nice walk along the Elbow River and hoped to see some ... read more

September 11, 2013 A wonderful day today! We stayed around the resort, deciding to invest in the $30 for the unlimited use of kayaks. Good value considering we each took out one sea kayak each and had them for about 3 hours in total. We’ve taken touring kayaks out on Quatra Island, Canadian canoes out on Dutch Lake in Clearwater and Emerald Lake and now we’re trying out those little sit on sea kayaks on Lake Okanagan. I was initially concerned I have to admit. I’ve seen people on these things before and assumed a slight breeze and they’d be in the water. You’re sitting on top of a piece of plastic after all, not unlike sitting on top of a surf board. How stable can it be? But of course that wouldn’t make any sense, ... read more

September 10, 2013 - Kelowna I feel like we're flying through our time here in Canada, which is worrying. I’m not sure any of us will be ready to go home. We’re getting very used to the routine of enjoying different places on a weekly or more frequent basis. We’ve been especially lucky this week with the weather being as good as it is combined with the fact that it’s so quiet here. It will be difficult to leave and I’m just glad we booked the 5 nights here. Apart from the flying insects that is. Those we will be glad to leave behind! (It's always handy when you have one little annoying thing that makes leaving a tiny bit easier!). Today we explored Kelowna, a pleasant little town on the edge of the Okanagan with ... read more
