As planned we were up early and ready to hit the road by 7.30am. It was brilliant travelling early on the roads - not much traffic to contend with at all. Had only driven a short way when we came across a stunning lake that was hugging the highway. The lake was called Green lake and it certainly lived up to its name. Grabbed a few shots and kept travelling. Shortly after we arrived at Nairn Falls Provincial Park. We decided to take a brisk 3km return hike to check out the falls. The hike took us through a mixed forest of Douglas-fir, western red cedar, western hemlock and paper birch trees. Nairn Falls is home to the only species of boa constrictor in Canada. This boa feeds on small rodents it finds in the leaf ... read more

Spent Thursday night in Williams Lake - only 3 hours away from Kamloops!!! Got into Kamloops just after lunch and stayed in Knutsford at a campground we have stayed at before. It is like the oasis in the middle of the desert. Lots of tress and green grass and a stream running through it. Had a great visit with Ken's cousin and will visit with our other friends tomorrow and then off the Kelowna for some vineyard touring on Sunday. Went to Music in the Park on Saturday night - something Kamloops has been doing for years. Every night from 7-8:30 they have free concerts down by the river. Listened to a great blues band. Took my friend Darlene with us on Sunday to Kelowna. She lives in Kamloops but has never been there to tour ... read more

This time last year I quoted that famous philosopher Yogi Berra by saying “It’s not over until it’s over”. Another slightly politically incorrect sports quotation is “It’s not over until the fat lady sings”. This was probably referring to opera in its original usage. But, in this case, this fine singer can rest her vocal cords because she is not needed yet. It ain’t over, folks. Dianne completes her year here in Kamloops knowing she did a fine job. Many people, staff, parents and students were disappointed to find out she was a one year wonder. However, the contract was for one year. The idea was to give them time to find a suitable long-term vice principal. Well, they found one, so it is time to start thinking about packing our bags and moving on. But ... read more

The Christmas vacation is now a memory and we have entered the second phase of our Kamloops adventure; the run up to Spring Break. Not that we gauge everything by school holidays, but it does give me some reference points for the blog. It was pointed out to me during our Pender visit that I had not published lately. So here goes. The north side of the South Thompson River In our trips back and forth between Alberta and Victoria we had driven along the south side of the South Thompson River many times. We had seen the formations in the hills and thought they looked “nice” but we didn’t appreciate what was there until we took the road that parallels the river on the north side from Kamloops to Chase. It seemed like a different ... read more

Since the late 60s, we had passed through Kamloops many times on our way back and forth between cities in Alberta and Victoria, BC. We even have stayed at various motels on the highway when splitting the long drive into two days. However, we had never actually visited Kamloops. Our impression was that it was dry, dusty and just plain too hot. So there were some misgivings when we decided to extend the adventure to this "new" city. We made several trips from Williams Lake in late June and it didn't seem too bad. Dry, dusty and hot but there was a certain rugged beauty to the area. Quite different from Williams Lake and certainly from the Gulf Islands but it looked promising. Leaving Williams Lake We couldn't believe a year had gone by when it ... read more

I am writing this on Monday night having just returned to my hotel in Kamloops after dinner. Kamloops is the overnight stop for the Rocky Mountaineer train from Vancouver to Banff. Despite not doing much, it’s been a pretty tiring couple of days. The flight from Sydney went fine. I was quite impressed with Virgin Australia’s international service. The staff were really good and very friendly. I was also lucky enough to score a seat behind the “bulkhead” as they call it. The downside, of course, is that’s where they put people who have a baby with them so they can put a bassinet on the wall. On the plus side, you get extra leg room but without the responsibility that comes with having an exit row seat. Of course there was a baby, but she ... read more

Geo: 50.6761, -120.338One of my earliest job postings had me living in Kamloops for a year and I was absolutely certain of that until we started exploring the area around our hotel. My memory seems to be razor sharp for all events that have taken place within the last hour or two, gets progressively fuzzier until I hit about a twenty year horizon, and then drops off dramatically to the point of false memories ("you mean I wasn't a star quarterback in the NFL??"). But as we wandered the streets of Kamloops, I didn't recognize a thing. Did I really live here for a year? Did I work here? Did I drink copious amounts of beer and chase women here (being prone to false memories has made me remarkably successful with women back in the day)? ... read more

This post will mainly be about photographs, We had a very special Christmas at Derek's parent's house, with his parents Rick and Janet, and with Derek's friend (and now ours) Tom & of course Derek & the dog Jofus. Christmas eve the boys went snowboarding & skiing whilst Kari stayed indoors with Rick & Janet learning to play crib as she had the flu pretty bad and wanted to be better for Christmas day. Unfortunately on this day Tom had a fall and tore some ligaments off his shoulder & Derek 'landed' a large jump which caused some heel damage, so after a quick visit to the hospital followed by the pub they returned home. Christmas day was an amazing feast of Turkey with a mince meat & breadcrumb stuffing :) ... read more
