Day 17... Greetings! A shorter update this time....! We have continued our trail up the Icefield Parkway, stopping at Bow Lake (which in our humble opinion is even more beautiful than Lake Louise) and took the oppotunity to jump on a 6 wheel drive 'Snowcoach' to take us on to the Athabasca Glacier - which was freezing! Naturally! After hiking up Parker Ridge for more views of the glaciers we drove on (accompanied by The Rolling Stones) to reach Jasper, where we are now staying for a few days. This morning we awoke to find ourselves surrounded by Elk! We offered them a maple syrup-drenched bacon sandwich but they seemed more than happy with the grass of our campsite! We then went to a quiet spot in Jasper called Pyramid Lake (no we haven't got bored ... read more

Heading onwards, we went into Johnson Canyon. All in all we walked nearly 10kms here, up and down the canyon to see the incredible waterfalls and creeks. For this one i think i'll let the photos do the talking...... read more

I took a train trip through the Canadian Rockies to get to Vancouver. It was an amazing trip! The train twists and turns through mountain paths and forests. It’s a definite must on everyone's to do list! We had a short stay in Jasper while we picked up some people and the town looks like a fun place to visit in summer. Its cool and touristy. And I LOVE touristy! Gimme anything tacky and marked up 50%! I'll take it! I eventually fell asleep to the rumbling of the train. Vancouver is my next stop.... read more

Jasper This morning we awoke early in the hopes of being able to sneak a quick walk around Lake Louise before we left for Jasper. Unfortunately, the rain still hadn't abated, but for a few minutes we managed to catch the unlikely sight of a rainbow hovering above the lake backed by the glaciers, which I suppose made the early rising somewhat worthwhile. On the way to Jasper this afternoon, Rika took us on a sidetrip took a trip out to Athabascar Glacier whereupon the rain promptly stopped pouring which was rather gracious of it, really. Sadly, Athabascar Glacier wasn't anything particularly exciting, although wet and slippery enough to prevent much exploring, even if they had allowed you to, which they didn't. We managed to reach Jasper by about 3pm and our Fairmont Hotel is so ... read more

Hopefully we're not giving the impression that we dislike the train in any way. It may be relentless, but it's excellent fun. Such a strange feeling having an almost infinite amount of time for reading, talking, sleeping and staring out of the window. So today we leave Jasper at lunchtime and have the highlight of this train journey - winding our way through the Rockies through quite amazing valleys. Plenty of snow around, although sadly no bears (at least, we missed them all). Several times throughout the day we hear an urgent PA announcement saying that the driver has spotted a bear up ahead. Everyone leaps to the windows on whichever side the bear is, and then everyone wonders where the bear has gone to. We don't find this lack of bear sighting particularly surprising. They ... read more

Hi all. Happy Canada Day to all our north of the border friends! As you know from the last post. Raeann and I are continuing our trip home through Jasper and Banff, Alberta without our fearless leader. One things for sure, now Rae and I have more room. This little Dodge van is great for 2! Sorry to see Dad go, but he's back home with Mary receiving both her and the docs loving care and the reports are good. I have to tell you, I'm 21 years younger than Dad and I am getting pretty tired myself. Into our 6th week on the road...home starts to sound better everyday. BUT THEN THERE'S THIS WONDERFUL COUNTRY Mucho Lake Wonderful, large, blue, aqua with forests and rock running right down to the water. I've decided that this ... read more

Dear all, first of my blogs,so bear (tehehehe) with me. Just got back from a week in the Canadian rockies, flew in to Calgary, straight in the hire car to Banff. Stayed in the Banff Caribou Lodge, very nice place, beds are so comfy, so nice after a long flight. Also has a great restaurant in the hotel, part of the Keg chain, can't beat a 14 oZ Prime Rib with garlic mash...mmmmmmmmm. After a very early start, that damn jet lag, headed off up the Icefield's Parkway en route to Jasper. If you go flat out the journey only takes about 2 hours, but im not sure anyone would want to do that...so much to see on the way there. In fact there are so many places to stop that it could easily take up 2 ... read more

OK. So. Countdown to Europe Update: T minus 32 days Important News: Chris is coming to Italy with me! Its booked, and paid for (well...it was charged, at the very least). How exciting! Whew. Now that THATS out of the way.... Just because I'm still in Canada doesnt mean I'm not doing exciting things! because I am. Well, I did. I spent the May Long weekend in Jasper, Alberta with my oh-so-wilderness inclined boyfriend, Chris. It was my first time being in Jasper, not counting my trip to Marmot, because a) it was only for the day, b) I never went into the town of Jasper (and thats important!) and c)I slept as soon as I got onto the bus. This was definately our first weekend away. I mean, we've done the weekend together thing, but ... read more

Banff behind us, the open road beckoning, we made our way up to the picturesque jasper national park (largest population of protected grizzly bears in the world). Sure enough the bear spotting was a success.... we watched (from the car) a baby black bear forage around on the side of the road. We also visited and walked upon the Athabasca Glacier and James tasted the glacier-fresh water. The scenery was amazing - massive mountains, valleys, rivers and lakes. The camping here is choice too, you can light fires and the sun doesn't set til about 10pm leaving lots of time to sit and yarn, and toast marshmallows. ... read more

Greetings, friends and/or relatives (and random readers, too) from accross the Earth's oceans. I have returned finally to do another journal before my head splits into many pieces after a huge cranial explosion. Ive experienced too much, well seen too much, at least and I need to get it down in typage before I lose it forever. Ive come close to buying a note pad and jotting shit down... maybe I should but these decisions are hard to make... I find it much easier typing so without crying too much I better get started. Im sitting here in Washington DC, The US capitol and chatting to someone via gmail, Im pretty relieved because I found free internet in a hotel lobby, after walking around 2 hours trying to find a net cafe. This is awesome as ... read more
