A whole lot of Nothing
From Airdrie to Drumheller is a whole lot of nothing. Just farm land, low rolloing hills and almost no trees. Tuesday June 28, 2011
Calgary In My Dust
Bike was packed and left the hostel at 10:30. It took a little over 2 hour’s just get beyond the city limits and Calgary airport. Calgary has some real nice biking trails along the Bow River, but beyond those biking trails it is a lot of work for a biker to get out of Calgary. I had to make a detour to get some groceries and lunch and stumbled upon the area of Calgary that I had wandered/explored when I was here back in early April waiting for CGG VERITAS to fly me back to P.E.I. Once outside city limits I jumped on Hwy #2. I was told cyclist were aloud on the #2 outside city limits. That being said #2 was still a 3-4 lane Hwy with posted speed limits of 110 km/hr. Let’s just say negotiating on and off ramps is a bit tricky when cars are heading at you at those speeds. It was nice to get off that highway (in Airdrie). From there I went east. Low rolling hills and a lot of fields for as far as the eye can see. Almost no trees, a whole lot
of nothing.
I only went as far as Beiseker; I suspect I rode about 75 km today. I wanted to go a bit farther but after my super break my body said “I don’t think so!” It has been about 7 years since I have bike with any regularity and my ass is sore, and I mean sore. So I hope 75 km on my first day after 7 years is respectable.
Spending the night at some sorry of an excuse of a campground for the night. But for only $15 I get a shower which alone is almost worth it. It would be next to impossible to find any other place to camp (for free). I haven’t seen a single wood lot today. Just and occasional row of tree’s here and there.

Drumheller!
My first biking destination; Drumheller, Alberta. Distance from Calgary to Drumheller is 145 km. I got a reasonable early start this morning. It was nice to wake up in a tent without rain for once. For the first time since Tobermory I got to pack a dry tent. Rode 65 km today, doing better time than yesterday. Pretty
sore and beat up coming into Drumheller though. More sunburnt then I have been in years. I got into Drumheller at about 1:30 pm.
Staying in a family RV and campground in town for 2 nights. $65 for 2 nights, ouch, don’t like spending that kind of money anywhere. Spending 2 nights in Drumheller due to a lighter day tomorrow. I am going to travel south east along the Red Deer River to check out The Hoodoos and then back track to Drumheller later in the day. The following day I will head out of town travelling north west along the North Dinosaur Trail. Tomorrow I will travel about 20 km out of town and then 20 km back into town. It seems pointless to carry all my gear only to end up in about the spot later that night.
