Up early after a very comfortable night in the "trailer" - then very tasty muffins made by by Jonathan & Wendy's 11 year old daughter Lexie for breakfast. The atmosphere around Cochrane was very smokey from the bush fires in Washington State - 1100kms away! Sad to hear that some firefighters have lost their lives fighting the fires. Left Cochrane with Jonathan we are 4! The route he led us on was similar to one I had plotted but with some extra loops. We did "Indian Graves" road (remember that washout road Keith?) This time we got all the way through reaching 2030m the highest we have reached on this trip. Once again above the snowline - snow in among the trees beside the road. More enjoyable gravel roads saw us at Crowsnest Pass to gas ... read more

I decided that I'm going to try and pack light this trip. Not that I didn't try and streamline things on my last trip - I thought I packed pretty light for two months! - but I do recall some walking around with a hugely heavy 60+20 L backpack strapped on my back and a small daypack on my front puffing up the steep hills in Cuzco out of breath from the sudden elevation gain... In any case, I want to try and do things differently this time. I'm going to do carry-on only. I have a lot of flights booked and with some of the lower cost carriers I just don't really trust that my stuff will show up when I do. Also so when I go on buses etc. I don't have to put ... read more

The published itinerary for our first day sounds pretty tame, but some things are more easily said than done: Arrive in Calgary by air and spend the rest of the day at leisure. Meet your traveling companions at a welcome reception hosted by your tour director. Spend the first night at the Fairmont Palliser Hotel. “Arrive by air” certainly sounds simple but there are no direct flights from St Louis to Calgary Canada. The only flight option which met or requirements left St Louis at 6:00 AM with a connection through Denver going to Calgary. So we were up bright and EARLY, and we left for the airport about 4:00 AM. Elizabeth stayed at the house last night and drove us – THANK YOU !!! We were able to check in for our flight ... read more

THE STAMPEDE The title is not just a quote from Robin Williams in the movie 'Jumanji'. There are two types of directions you run when the Stampede is in town in Calgary. You run to it or run as far away from it as you can. The 10 day event known as the 'Greatest Outdoor Show On Earth' has so much depth to it I find it hard to work out where to start explaining it. It is event that brings in so many groups of people from all over the world and you would be mistaken for thinking that the common dress is to wear Cowboy gear in these parts or as my exchange teaching partner Mel would say in 'Cow town'! STAMPEDE PARADE The Stampede starts with its sneak peak day where most Calgarians ... read more

So, I have another two days to tell about. Yesterday was our trip west. We started at Gananoque in the Thousand Islands and, as usual, left later than we planned. We'll have to do something about that trend. We drove directly to Toronto to meet Seymour and Doris at Mother Tuckers restaurant near the airport. We had a lovely meal and a wonderful time with Seymour & Doris. Dad called us on Skype but we could barely hear him with all the noise around. Anyway, we transferred two big suitcases to Seymour's car, said our goodbyes and headed off to the airport with a lot less luggage than we'd been lugging around before. What a relief! We got lost in the airport a bit. If you think Ben Gurion is confusing you should try Pearson! Imagine ... read more

Geo: 51.0451, -114.063In the end, this was a good trip with the boys - definitely not as wild as the typical stag, but infinitely more gourmet and packed with a hella good amount of deliciousness. Who needs the debauchery and bling of Vegas, when you can have cheap Spanish wine and gourmet Basque cuisine? There's something to be said for just chilling out with the boys and shooting the shit over a coffee or beer, while watching the world go by on a languid Spanish day. And how often can you drag a group of guys overseas, away from their families, for a week and a half? This trip was therapeutic, as I finally got over all the resentment and anger I had over being mistreated by Pat over the past few years. Really, it was just ... read more
