Airport
Me at New York airport, just hours away from my new home Bermuda..... greetings
well am now in Bermuda, was a bit of an adventure getting here but finally I have arrived. The trip from Australia to La was good, we had a exit seat so we could move about a bit so the 14 hours weren't as painful as expected. Then LA to New York was good, but then they needed medical assistance so Erin and I went to help. They needed to give a lady and injection (chronic pain sufferer) but she had no documentation or orders with her, so we couldn't help, but we got a bottle of french champers for our trouble. Overnight in newyork, we were buggered and I made things worse by waking every 15 to blow my nose, not fun for Erin who had to put up with me interupting her sleep.... up at 5 to get back to the airport. We then proceeded to leave erins bag on the hotel shuttle bus. The lady checking us in made a phone call and got the bus to come back so we gave her the champers for helping us...it was a bugger to carry anyway.
So after a 2 hour flight we arrived in Bermuda. Once
Accomodation
Edgehill manor guest house, our home away from home at immigration we were taken into a special office and fined $125 each for not having all our paper work. Breaking our first bermudan law in our first 5 minutes....not a good start. The hospital was meant to send it to the airport but they stuffed up, so and hour and a bit in immigration saw it sorted out and then it was on the customs to be charged for my laptop, phone and camera (they charge 25% levy on all electrical good coming in a staying for more that 3 months...I did a pretty moderate estimated of my belongings thank god....mum would be horrified to know that I said I would sell my lap top for $175 just so I didn't have to pay so much)...$81 US later and we had finally cleared the airport.
Of course our driver that was meant to get us was not coming, so we had to get a cab. We cabbed to the hospital to be greeted by the HR manager, she took the receipt for the fines and organised for the cabby to take us shopping for food then onto our accomodation and then she'd pick up the fare, $60 later
Main street
Main Street of Hamilton, Bermuda.... hopefully they will come through with the goods.
After a shakey start to arrving in Bermuda we spent yesterday (friday) opening bank accounts, appling for a social security number, getting staff ids, having a brief tour of the hospital (interrupted of course by a fire alarm (there was a fire in the morgue...friday is free cremation day in bermuda) and the need to evacuate the building) and also organised mobile phones. We had a pretty productive day and have walked miles and discovered and found our way basically around the main drag. The lady at the bank who helped with our accounts was lovely and wrote us a list of where to find things and highlighted a map for us and gave us heaps of hints and tips.
Our accomodation is nice. it is a guest house and we are here cause all the staff accomodation is full. My room has a great view of the pool and is nice and spaceious. Erins is a bit smaller, but has a kitchen, I have the view and she has the sink....no fair really, her room in cold and dark and mine is sunny a light. I think she would
cute street
All the buildings are like this throughout the island it is so cute. trade the kitchen in a heartbeat for a bigger brighter room. She may have to move cause they had booked someone in later in the month into the room, so heres hoping she scores a bigger, brighter room, with a kitchen so we can still cook and try and save some cash. and then she doesn't have to move again so she can actually settle in and unpack. They think we will be here for a while. The lady who booked us in said we were here till june.
It is beautiful here. the main street reminds us of something out of noody ville or postman pat...it is cute and colourful. The people are gorgeous. They are so friendly, saying hello and smiling as u pass. The wheater so far has been great, sunny and still, not a cloud in the sky. It is so pretty and quaint here I don't think u could ever get sick of looking at the view.
I have a shared phone with the room next door, which means that if someone calls for me and they answer the caller needs to tell them to hang up and call again and they won't answer, its a bit of a bugger, but I just keep telling the guests who arrive next door that that is what needs to be done. I now also have a bermudan sim card. It is pretty cheap for me to send text messages from it so once we sort out how to get them back from australia then I will be able to text like I still in hamilton Australia, not Hamilton Bermuda.
The taxi driver was telling Erin that they are attempting to start a ladies cricket team in Bermuda and tryouts are this weekend, I might rock up, who knows. There is also going to be world 20/20 cricket here end of April. I have checked it out and think I will go. The Aussie team is not the top team, but has Ian Healy captaining it and a few other big names but not many. Greg blewitt is another one....The first aussie match in on an week day arvo so I will probably be working. But the final is a sat night so I might get tickets and hope Australia make it in to the final.
So I guess that is it for now. I think we are going to go out tonight and check out the night life and try and meet so people and get the ball rolling with the met and greets and a circle of friends.....
Oh we have free internet at the accomodation too, so I can check my email really often so I will be able to write smaller less novel type versions of adventures later....oh and we are 13 hours behind so 8pm there 7am here, easy to remember and good too cause the times don't suck when I can call u guys over there.
later for now........
