Jamil. Hi it's me Jamil. We are in Alanya, which is a big city in Turkey. They have good food here, like doner kebab and cheeseburgers and the beach is nice because of the blue water. Yesterday we went to Side, a small town on the mediterranean where the beach is not as pretty as Alanya but they have a lot of ruins from the Roman period, about 2000 years ago. They had a hospital, a library and a place were the emperor would sit and the chrıstıans woud look at him and if he put his thumb down, the lions whould come out and eat the chrıstıans, but if he didn't, they would be safe to go home. So it's like if he's in a good mood they are safe and if he's in ... read more

Hello, I have been having some problems publishing the blog due to technicalities, so I just published the blog from this morning and now it is evening of the same day and will publish another quick message. We had a great day of touring again and I made some more connections with regard to One Child's Village. There may be an opportunity to raise funds through some business people in Nairobi, so I will continue to look into that further. Today we saw the underground city. It was originally built by the Hittites over 3000 years ago by tunnelling into the soft earth made of compressed volcanic ash. The city goes down at least 16 stories underground and was used to escape attacks and raids from invading armies. There are over 90 such underground cities in ... read more

As I write this Emma and I have only been in away from our Melbourne home for 6 days, but the amount we've seen makes it seem like we've been gone for much longer. It certainly didn't take me long to fall in love with Istanbul! We stayed in the Sultanahmet area of Istanbul, which is home to two famous mosques - the Blue Mosque and the Aya Sophya. We were in walking distance to these as well as the Sea of Marmara, the Grand Bazaar, the hippodrome where chariot races were once held, lots of Turkish Baths, eateries...basically enough that we spent four full days exploring the area. Some of the things that first struck me about Istanbul is that the locals like to keep everything clean. Someone was always washing a car, sweeping ... read more

Hey all! itsme again we got lucky and found a really cheap internet cafe so i get to use it again :D Today we visited the Blue Mosque. its gorgeous and is built with tiles on the inside. Turkey temperature is out the roof! its about 38 celcius today. we went on the tour of this palace. the palace was the home of 7 sultans. we had a frnech guide (cause all the english ones were taken) and he was terrible. i could bearly understand him! but this palace had a harem. a harem is a home for about 400 women ages 12-60. for the king. and his....ahem...free time. he had four wives, and the rest were for one day a year or so. fun huh? The drivers here drive so fast its ridiculous. they refuse ... read more

Geo: 39.9439, 32.856We're staying at the InterIstanbul hotel where things are pretty utilitarian, not like the beautiful, interesting, high-end places that we've been up until now. The room has four beds, a desk and a closet. The view is of someone's laundry. I'm hoping the shower will get fixed today, but we do have a tub. The kids love the elevator which has no safety gate between you and the wall as it moves up and down. Also, there is a rack of postcards in the lobby that feature pictures of scantily-clad babes and ancient, well-endowed male fertility staues. Those are worth some giggles. The location here is very good. We are two blocks from the Grand Bazaar and maybe a quarter mile away from many of the other big major sites like the Blue Mosque.Yesterday we ... read more

Geo: 39.9439, 32.856Alex: I am tired. Please do not disturb. I was really excited to see dad. We went on a sleeper train. When I looked out the window, there were lots of houses. It took a while for us to get to Istanbul; we took a ferry too. I saw some other ships, but mostly just water. We went to Europe from Asia. Anyway, now I am in Istanbul. It's a big open city. It's also crowded. The Grand Bazaar is there too. I bought two new shirts and a pants today. We got a lot of new magazines that dad brought too. And Dad also brought fresh clothes that I was happy about. You heard the message up above: do not disturb!... read more

Geo: 39.9439, 32.856Kate: Today we went to the Grand Bazaar. There is an indoor and an outdoor part of it. What I noticed was that there are a ton of gold objects, mostly gold jewelry in most of the stores in the inddor bazaar. When we ventured outside, Mom and I checked out a spirograph stand. A spirograph is a series of plastic disks that can be used to create drawings. We weren't able to get one at the stand at the time, but later we got one for 3YTL. For the whole day I noticed that there were an insane amount of stray cats and kittens roaming the streets of Istanbul. I wanted to pat and feed each and every one of them because they were so scrawny, but I couldn't pet them because of ... read more

It took around 2 hours by boat to go to Dalyan and it was a very hot journey with the sun right on top of us! Once there we changed to smaller boats and made our way to the Mud Baths and it was fun digging to get the proper mud rather then the watery mud which seemed to go. We stood in the sun to get dried up and it was quite a site! It took a bit long because the layer we had on was quite thick. Washing it off was a task in itself because the shower were so strong it was hard to stay under them. Then we tried the spring water which stunk of rotten eggs! It nice and warm but we didn't stay long in the water and then ... read more
