Middle East » Yemen December 9th 2008

At this time of the trip I was getting settled into the differences of lifestyles. With this, going deeper into the traditional areas of the country afforded me the chance to gain a better of sense of what Yemen is really about. For the next 3-4 days, I explored the various towns of Kawkaban, Shibam, Al Tawila and Al Hajjarh. I must admit that I struggled to decide which pictures to post to attempt to show the beauty of the areas. Walking through towns that have been looked over from the modern day, meeting people that are connected to the land, even just seeing the sun set from a remote mountain top village, all of these experiences are challenging to describe in words. Perhaps what I can say best is that with an open mind and ... read more

Well, Sanaa has been nice, but I began to ask the locals, "What else is there besides this historical and peaceful city?" The response, "How about some quiet and beautiful mountain towns?" What they really meant, "Care for some adventure and a chance to go where no American has gone before?" Either way, sure, sounds like a good use of time to me! Thus, a road trip through Yemen ensues. It is much easier though if you simply hire a driver and guide. It can be a bit pricey, but having people to share the car with can reduce the costs. As imagined, sometimes it got a little interesting. My first experience of being in a local restaurant with tribal man, all carrying their own AK-47's while being the only American for probably miles around was ... read more

At this point in time, I have been living in the Middle East for around a year and a half. After some consideration, a good friend and I decided that it was time to see more of the traditional side of the region. Yes, Dubai is in the Middle East, but no, it does not accurately reflect what the culture of the area is. As for Yemen, there is nothing but traditional culture. First and foremost, I think it is important to mention that Sanaa, the capitol city of Yemen, was very safe and the people were very pleasant. Traveling north there were some security requirements, but that will be explained in the next entry. This overall trip was just about 2 weeks long. Within this time, many adventures took place that had me meet new ... read more

Bombing of US Navy vessels, kidnappings of foreign tourists, tribal warfare including car bombings. This genre of headline had a lot of people asking, "why the hell are you going to Yemen?" I initially put these enquiries down to western ignorance to the everyday reality of this corner of the world. When residents of other Arab nations we have visited asked the same question, I'll have to confess some lingering doubts concerning the wisdom of visiting this country. "So answer the question Yeatesy, why did you go to Yemen?" Glad you asked but I'm not quite sure. Maybe I should simply quote Mallory, "Because it's there?" The question mark indicating there wasn't a lot of conviciton in that reply. Photographically it looked amazing, the Old city of its capital Sana'a is a World Heritage site, it ... read more

Something unexpected and not on the itinerary. As we cruised down the Red Sea (Latitude 15 32 N and Longitude 41 50 E) there was an announcement from the Cruise Director that the Captain had reported that there was an active volcano erupting and that we would pass very close to it (within 3 miles). It was spectacular. We witnessed ongoing multiple eruptions on the volcano which comprises the Yemeni island of Jazirat At Ta'ir. The peak stands at 244 m above sea level and we witnessed three active domes, the highest, a perfect cone, being the currently active vent. At our closest we were just 1.5 nautical miles off the volcano. The captain changed course to allow us spectacular views of the eruption and lava flows ranging in colour from white through yellow to red. ... read more

Happy to be in an Arab country again. Not just because now we can relax about taking care of our belongings or to be ripped off at everyday purchasing, but is nice to feel in a familiar culture - I'm surprised to notice how I missed the call to pray at 4:30 in the morning. After so long changing places every two or three days we needed some rest. Stop for a while in the same place, have a bed, a kitchen (is amazing how much we missed a kitchen!!). But stay without doing something can be really boring. So if we want to stay in one place, we have to do something. Well we are in the Middle East, we have been in 6 Arab countries so far, and we loved many things about it, ... read more

I have been the Fulla, the local Barbie doll, of my yemeni friends lately, that liked to see me getting dressed in yemeni , or arabic clothes just for the fun of it. I wish I could put pictures of some of the wonderful women I met here in Sana'a but it's been impossible to have their permission or their husbands for that matter. IMPOSSIBLE! Even for the henna session, I tried to take a picture of Sabah doing it on me, at least her hands, and she said he husband wouldn't allow it. Out of respect I didn't even try to sneak my camera into one of the room, celebration or hammam (though would have been fun to do so). I guess you'll have to content yourself with me. Gotta admit it is the ... read more

Yes, it happened yesterday. A full celebration, the girls putting on some make up on me, fixing my hair, bringing me some tea during the whole preparation, dressing me up in pink, even got the youyou part. I did marry in pink, don't ask me why. It was intense, the little girls wanting to be close to the bride, "aaroussa", because she is special and the queen of the day, I was lucky to have some girls dancing for me too, in the yemeni style. The men were upstairs chilling and chewing Qat in the meantime. Yes, men and woman do not share the celebration together. They shoot guns, they dance with their dagger holding up in the sky, and the woman dance, and ... chew Qat too. I got married in Yemen, but I ... read more

Yeah man - we’ve been in Yemen! Last Christmas and New Year dad brought us with him to Yemen. “Yemen” sounds like “Yeah man” so we first thought he was joking with us. But there is actually a country called Yemen. We think it’s a strange name for a country. But we are glad they didn’t call it “Shit man”. That would have been even more strange. To go to Yemen we had to go via Istanbul. We had one day in Istanbul and there we had a look at the central town. It was a very nice place but right then a little too cold. We don't like cold. We have too little clothes/fur on us. We prefer visiting warmer places. But we decided that we will have to go back there some other day. ... read more
