Just how applicable is that title? I had left the African continent, and a brief transit stop in Doha, Qatar had brought me to Dubai after an absence of a few years, partly because you can forever rely on the evolving nature of the city to yield a few more surprises with each successive visit. First having visited back in 2007 and yet again in 2015, this Emirati city tends to grow in size and stature along with the kind of accumulation of wealth which the oil boom and the 'hub of commerce' status have allowed it to. I am well aware of the fact then that this is my third Dubai travel blog entry, but a quick turnaround from an aborted visit to Ethiopia meant that 8 nights in the UAE would entail some serious ... read more

I typically don’t include travel to the Emirates as part of my travel blog. It has always been more of a visiting family destination than a holiday one. Despite its sunshine and heat, cleanliness and safety, good food and nice hotels; it’s not a place that I like to visit. Give me raw, rugged, real and Nature any week of the annual holiday season. That said, I can see why some people like it. And the week I visited my sister with my mum was a relaxing one. We ate, shopped, walked, relaxed on clean beaches with very overpriced umbrellas. My favourite meal had to be one at sunset on the beach, toes in sand, sipping cocktails as the sun went down. We don’t get to do things like that very often. I also enjoyed the ... read more

I know, when it comes to blogging, I'm only around two months late for the moment. But slowly we are getting there. After 5 weeks in Europe, and 5 other weeks in Russia, we board the direct plane from St Petersburg to Dubai. I've been fortunate enough to visit the Expo 1992 in Seville as well as multiple stops in 2010 for the Expo in Shanghai. These were so fun to visit that I couldn't not bring Tanya to Dubai. So this one is easy, it's just a 5 nights stop on our way back home in early March. Tanya has lived in Dubai and I've stopped to count how many time we visited, so the aim was solely about the Expo and having dinner with few friends. Ideal time to visit an Expo should be ... read more

I decided to spend my last full day in UAE visiting Abu Dhabi. It is about a 1.5 hour drive from Dubai. The roads were great and the traffic was pretty light. Abu Dhabi is the political capital and makes up 87% of the land area of UAE. Their population is 2.2 million. No surprise that oil is over 50% of their GDP followed by construction. Our first stop was the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. The mosque is large enough to accommodate over 40,100 worshippers at one time. The carpet in the hall is considered to be the world's largest carpet. It took 1200 carpet knotters 2 years to complete it and it weights 35 tons. All of the white marble and the inlaid jewels for the flowers definitely reminded me of the Taj Mahal. Though it ... read more

Since I needed a connecting flight to get home I thought I would stop in Dubai for a few days since I didn’t have the clothes to stop in Amsterdam. I also have never flown on Eremites Airlines so I thought I would give it a try. I’ll admit I hadn’t thought too much about the history of UAE so I did some research on my 5 hour flight over. This past December was the 50th anniversary of the creation of the United Arab Eremites. Prior to that it was knows as the Trucial States. But, now they are a collection of seven emirates making up the UAE: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah, Ras Al khaimah, and Sharjah. Each state has waterfront, city, then mostly desert. Abu Dhabi is the capital and about ... read more

I was up early on Monday to explore the city. I started in the historic district with breakfast at a picturesque cafe and then wandered the streets and souks. Walking down the narrow streets that lead to mosques as well a small markets was lovely to explore. It was a short time that you didn't feel you were in a huge city. I was able to find the metro to head to the worlds biggest mall. I quickly explored the gigantic mall complete with 1200 stores and an aquarium that you can scuba dive in. It is something to be seen, but talk about over the top compared to Uganda. Just outside is the world’s tallest building; It’s so tall that it gets hazy at the top. I opted to not go to the top as ... read more

My fifth time back, I started at the opportunity plaza again. This was early February, so not hot, but warmer than I thought. I stopped for lunch here after Vietnam, planning Vietnamese food, but found this nice Korean-Japanese restaurant instead: Kojaki. It was empty and the staff were friendly. I ordered a nice refreshing drink (non-alcoholic) and a bibimbap - it was good and satisfied any craving I may have for it, but it lacked that sizzling hot bowl that keeps cooking the rice and egg as you eat it. My sixth time was in the late afternoon during the week (Tuesday) after I had dropped my car off for service. This time I took the metro and was taken to the main entrance, so I finally got to see Al Wasl plaza. This was a ... read more

Dubai Expo 2020 opened in October.... 2021. So, a year later, we were finally able to enjoy what has been advertised since I returned to Dubai in 2018. My friend does a lot of work there and in the months leading up to it, she was extremely busy and had canceled a lot of our usual meet ups - cycling, drinks, hikes, etc. So, to make up for it, she got me a season pass! Yay! I told her I would get her a spa day for when she finally had the time... Anyway, my friend and I made a few trips early on after the opening before he took his sabbatical to Central America and took delight in "judging" the pavilions. I think we went twice together and I went twice on my own. So, ... read more
