Hi everyone, Well I am here to report another interesting thing I did (okay not really but I am pretending it is!). I went kayaking in the mangroves of Abu Dhabi and afterwards a bunch of couch surfers (Abu Dhabi group) met up to go camping in the Liwa desert. The kayaking, which I have never done before was pretty good. Amanda was my kayak partner and I told her right from the start...expect us to tip over. But after thinking about it, I forced myself to stay afloat as...let's face it...Jaws could be lurking. If anyone was to be eaten during that outing...it would have been me. You never know...it could happen! Anyway, some people did tip over...mainly because Romain was pushing them in. It was really cool to see all the small crabs and ... read more

This time around I rented a Hummer H3 for the trip. Guess what it sucks in sand. Too heavy so sinks in easily and I somehow felt it was way too underpowered for all the hype we hear about them. I am sure all you Humvee dune bashers are raring to prove me wrong so guess what? Prove me wrong! All in all a good trip. Stopped for grub at Liwa Resthouse and nice photo ops. Enoy the pics!... read more

Once again my obsession with this place drags me 500 odd kilometers into the barren wasteland to experince utter silence and stark beauty at its best. Pitch dark roadways, chattering cold tents, undies full of sand, rattle snake tracks and inflatable beds have become something I am starting to get comfortable with! I've done a lot of solos on this sector and always felt it was a long way from home. The road never seems to end. The constant humming of tires go on ceaselessly urging you to silently take a nap on the wheel. Add to it the fatigue of driving for four straight hours you know what you have. A perfect disaster! But this time, it was different. The drive didn't seem so long, I didn't feel so lonely and I ofcourse I ... read more

At long last I was able to take my brand new car, the Toyota FJ Cruiser out into the desert and do some dune basing. This experience proved quite exciting, somewhat terrifying (especially when Yuki drove) but certainly addicting. I am proud to say, I did not have to get help or dig the car out once! Anyway, the key to dune bashing, or at least what I learned thus far, is to keep your momentum to get over the dunes. Also, map out routes, because when you are about to go over a dune, you literally can not see over the other side. This means that 10 feet can mean the difference of being stuck for 2 hours, or having a really good jump. Anyway, all went well and I promise Mom I will always ... read more

Yes, at long last I have made it to the real desert. Well, this is actually a bit more of the tourist desert, for I actually make it to the real real desert later on. Any way, this was a nice introduction to the desert that makes all tourists feel like they're seeing the desert. What goes on here is pretty cool though, but please don't generalize and think that this is the reality out here. From what I've seen in my few trips to the real desert, the people are very nice, very humble and pleasant. This place is kind of like the Disneyland of the Middle East. All right, that being said and done, here's what we got. First we rode out a couple of hours from Dubai to get to the desert. Once ... read more
