Leaving Dubai for Amman to start tour of Holy Lands with a group of over twenty others from Australia, New Zealand and USA. The USA chap is an Aussie working there. Also had a chap recently arrived in Australia from China. Some of the group met at Dubai airport after flying from various parts of the world. Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Dallas, NZ, while others were met at the airport in Amman. Then the fun of going through the usual security. Met by tour guide Japhar, who guided us through to the border with Israel, having provided some lovely goodies to eat. Through the border lugging luggage and on to a new bus and new guide to our hotel.... read more

The Dubai Mail is something to be experienced. A massive aquarium, for which you can purchase tickets to swim with sharks etc. the aquarium is quite a few stories high and long enough and wide enough for a vast variety of fish to swim. There is a gold souk as well as a plethora of shops, both up end, and smaller specialty shops.... read more

Staying near the creek we were able to organise a hop on hop off bus ride around Dubai. There are four colored routes and we used a few. Want to go again as we found there was way too much to see in just a few days.... read more

The Burj Khalifa is currently the world’s tallest building at over 800 metres. We too the brave step to firstly spend money and then to soar to level 148 for a sunset view over Dubai. Unfortunately the sunset was not so good. We thought we would watch the dancing fountains at 6.00 pm. That did not eventuate, so headed to floors 125, then 124 for exit. Proceeded down the lift and as we reached ground we noted the dancing fountain show was on. Raced along corridors passed the photographer and raced outside, only to be met by an influx of people coming back from the dancing fountains.... read more

Dubai 23rd & 24th March Well its a hard life. Our second day in Dubai (at leisure) gave us time to explore the QE2 more with an afternoon tour (more Structured) to give an insight to what they are going to preserve and what to modernise. It’s a busy ship, I know its a hotel but to us walking up the gangways, you do come on board. Today there were conferences, a birthday party (Paddington themed) for a 2 year old (no expense spared) and business meetings. This evening we were in the Queens Grill for a 5 course dining experience, and it didn’t disappoint. From the Amuse Bouche, Soup (potato & leek), Fish (Sea Bass, curry butternut, samosa, Coriander crusted potato & pickled shallots), a main of Angus Beef Tenderloin (with braised beef cheek, a ... read more

Saturday 23rd March I now realise why we don’t like flying. Ok, the initial boarding at Birmingham was tolerable, the flight tolerable but when we landed at Dubai so did 22 other flights within 30 to 40 mins and that caused chaos in passport control and immigration. Our accommodation looked good as we circled waiting to land, the Queen Elizabeth 2 looking majestic in Port Rashid lit by a watery morning sun. She looked to all intent and purposes ready to set sail but sadly her cruising days are long gone but from a distance she was looking good. This holiday is to reacquaint us with Queen Elizabeth 2, the first ship we ever cruised on and we jumped at the chance to stay on her when the package was announced a few months ago. We ... read more

The joke goes: What do you call a driver in Dubai who uses their turn signal? … A Tourist! The only good thing about driving on the roads of Dubai is…they are new…that’s about it. If you can travel in the New Jersey/New York City area, you can pretty much navigate in Dubai. There are LOTS of circles (or rotary’s or round-abouts – whatever you want to call them), speeds bumps, speed humps (there is a difference), and U-Turns. Unless you are at a traffic light, it is rare that you will find a left-hand turn. In this country they have tried to make driving idiot proof while there are lots of chances (and people) to be a complete idiots. When you come to a four-way intersection with a light, one way is allowed a green ... read more

After a very quiet year on the travelling front, I’ve finally got around to a bit of travelling having decided to give that annoying work thing a rest for a couple of months. Having discovered a love for joining a scientific expedition a couple of years ago I signed myself up for a trip to the wilds of Arabia and a bit of winter sunshine. In a similar vein to the Mongolian adventure, I found a trip which would be monitoring wildlife and counting vegetation but this time in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR: https://www.ddcr.org/en/index.aspx) which is about an hour’s drive from the modern city of Dubai. Having been to Dubai many moons ago I was curious to see how it had changed but didn’t really want to spend too much time there, so this ... read more
