To Cairo (2003): I traveled to Egypt in September 2003 after the SARS was just over. We arrived in Dubai at midnight after a 6-hour flight from Bangkok on Emirate Airlines. We had to transit in this city for a day on the way to Cairo. My trip was a long time ago, so my photos may look old now. It was also the first time I visited an Arabian country. Despite a short transit, we still had enough time to visit some places in Dubai. We were amazed by the development of this city, which used to be a desert 30 years ago. The Burj Al Arab Hotel was the highlight on our visit. We then went to Jumeirah Mosque and Bastakia Citadel. When other people on the tour were busy shopping at the market, ... read more

Landed in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. 2002 when the time that Dubai was beginning to boom i would say. Sheikh zayed road (The main high way in Dubai) was with just a Stand alone building that was the world trade center and a couple of others with just sand on both sides of the road. While the days passed by traveling every single day on that road for a good 7 years, could see the developments coming up. well it was not obvious when you pass by the same road twice a day and you don't realize that many projects coming up, but when you pass by these amazing buildings you start thinking was this there before?!? this includes the Burj Khalifa (The worlds tallest) or they call it ''At The TOP''... read more

We left Melbourne at about 7pm, and then had a quick stopover in Singapore for a few hours. Then we were off to Dubai for a day. We arrived at about 5am, and got through the airport pretty easily. We went to the hotel to sleep for a few hours, and then decided to do a day tour of the city. We visted the Jumeria Beach Hotel, The Burj Al Arab, and The Jumeria Mosque. After the tour, we headed back to the airport, and got our flight to Egypt.... read more

My last two days in Dubai were spent on friendly conversation, good meals, and walks on the local streets. On Monday, to my surprise, we went to watch John play hockey. Dubai had an indoor winter arena with rinks and a facility with a short ski hill! Perhaps this could be considered the the hot-climate equivalent of heated swimming pools in cold climates. On Tuesday we visited the Bastakiya , the old town where historically merchants lived. The fine towers and houses were being carefully restored as an outdoor museum, encouraging visitors to use their imaginations. Not far away, we went to the Dubai Museum , which I had visited earlier by mistake. The walls and turrets from the original fort spoke to the security historically necessary to ... read more

Although I made no notes, who could forget the fabulous shop of wood furniture, exotic carvings, and miscellaneous other things? Peggy was used to dealing with the vendor, so they went off in pursuit of whatever it was she wanted. I trailed through the aisles, marveling at the mainly Indian tables, chairs, chests and carved ornaments. Everything was almost jumbled together with space for walking amongst the innumerable items for sale. As Peggy and John were completing their negotiations, I discovered a box with dozens of painted china cupboard/drawer pulls. Immediately I wanted them for my kitchen cupboards and drawers. Closing my eyes, I mentally calculated how many I would need. Then I dug through the collection to select as many different patterns as possible. My own negotiations commenced with the vendor. In the afternoon, we ... read more

Our starting intention was to visit the Strait of Hormuz off the tip of Oman. We had the back-up plan of visiting Fujairah on the Gulf of Oman. We set off at 7:30 and drove along the route I am now familiar with through Sharjah. Leaving the city behind, we travelled past ordinary concrete, single-storey buildings interspersed with sand held (for the most part) by low bushes and clumped grasses. There hasn’t been any rain since Peggy and John arrived many months ago, except for a brief shower in Sharjah City. What astonished me was that the whole highway was furnished with street lights down the divider (4 lanes). After at time, we came to ... read more

April 19 This morning, I went to the Western and (relatively) touristy shopping malls on Jumeirah Beach Road. There seemed to be a preponderance of UAE shoppers; all the goods were either Western or pitched at tourists. Nevertheless, Peggy said that Magrudy’s Bookstore in the Magrudy Mall is the best in Dubai (at least in English). MagGrudy Mall is an “outdoor mall”, more like a market of stores in an approximate square. The selection was extensive, with an excellent travel section and quite a few local history and travel/picture books. The latter are expensive, however, and the pictures are very commercial, i.e., stylized and not reminiscent of what I’ve seen. I did buy a book, set in Al Ain , one of the UAE cities. (Peggy remarked that it’s not that good.) I a... read more

Today, John did errands and I accompanied him. We needed to go to the Omani consulate for my visa to visit the Musandam Peninsula (Straits of Hurmuz) on Thursday. So, I got up at 7:00 and we dropped Peggy at work (Dubai Women’s College). Then we went to the Omani consulate. Outside, there was a little building for visas. We were apparently the first there, and no one was inside to help. After a brief wait, two people came into the office. One sold travel insurance, and one did the visas. After some tense discussion, it transpired that my application had to be sent to Abu Dhabi and would take until Sunday. The insurance man and another man in the slowly forming line said just to drive to the border and get the visas there. ... read more

During the day, I wrote travel notes and enjoyed reading in the cool of the apartment, with a swim later in the afternoon. Every afternoon, after either a rest or a snooze, I go to the swimming pools in the apartment building. There are often a family of Indian children playing in the pool when I arrive. This afternoon there were also some English children and some sun bathers. Usually I am the only adult swimmer, although John often swims later in the day. I read and swim in the intervals of taking a dip and go back to the apartment after a couple of hours. From anywhere in the city, to return to the apartment you just tell the taxi driver to go to the Lulu Centre, which is about 3 blocks from the apartment. ... read more

I have to write the day of the week in these notes, because here the days are so different from at home. The “weekend” is Thursday and Friday, so Sunday is an ordinary weekday in every respect. Today I ventured off on my own. My objective was to see a museum in the restored house of a former, beloved leader. Except, the taxi took me to the Dubai Museum . It was wonderful! What I took to be the whole museum was the inside of a rather small fort. It had been well-restored, with obviously old brick walls and a rampart. But it was perhaps one hundred feet square. The sun was highly concentrated within the four walls, literally breathtakingly hot! The walls were actually double, with a passage along each side that was cool, although ... read more
