Saturday March 11 – The last day of our holiday already. I woke up at 7:30am feeling better, which was a relief. I had breakfast and repacked, and then we checked out of the hotel and took the metro towards the Dubai Marina. We were heading to the apartment that my friend Jerry was renting for a couple weeks. Luckily we had discovered we would both be in Dubai, so we made plans to see each other today. From the metro, Jeroen and I got a taxi as it was still a 30 minute walk or so to Jerry’s place. We had a nice reunion, although his stomach bug was still affecting him. We’d both been feeling ill the day before. After catching up a bit, Jeroen and I headed to the Big Bus again, this time to see a bit of the marina and beach lines. First stop was a mall-type souk that we walked around, then we headed to the Palm Island to see the aquarium. When we got there we had a burger from a food truck first, as we were getting a bit hangry. Next stop was the Mall of the Emirates, which has an indoor skiing
area called Ski Dubai. There is a ski lift and slopes inside, and your tickets includes clothing rental as well as the skis. Amazing. From the mall we went to the marina for a boat ride that was also included in our ticket. We were there a little early, so we grabbed a snack from the supermarket. Our boat left at 5pm and it took an hour. It was really good, as it gave you close-up and different perspectives of the buildings we’d been seeing from a distance. I quite liked this part of town. It has a lot of skyscrapers close together, which somehow seemed more city-like than much of the city, which is just tall buildings lining the highway and then nothing much else. After the boat ride we wanted to take a water bus to a stop closer to Jerry, but there was a misunderstanding and we ended up walking to the water bus stop, rather than taking one to that stop. From there we walked back to Jerry’s. We chatted for a bit and then the four of us headed out for dinner at the Cheesecake Factory. I haven’t been to one in years, and I
was excited to get the chance now. Jeroen, Jerry and I ended up getting salads, something I normally wouldn’t do, but I knew we wanted cheesecake, so I went for the salad. Armagan got pasta, which I would normally do. And then we ordered the ‘Smores Cheescake with toasted marshamallow. Yum and yum. So glad we went there. And such a surprise but they ended up treating us to this lovely dinner. So kind.
Back at Jerry’s I repacked a bit and Jeroen showered and then in no time it was 10:30pm and we were saying our goodbyes and heading to the airport via taxi and metro. It was so nice to end the trip with a visit to a friend. It took an hour and in eight minutes we had checked in. Two minutes later I realized I had also checked my fleece jacket, which I had meant to take out of my bag while we waited in line, but the process happened so fast, with no line, that I did not even think of it. Our flight was supposed to board at 1:45am but the flight was delayed by thirty minutes. We had plenty of time so
we wandered around the airport looking at different money exchanges to see where to change money. And there was a difference. So be sure to look around next time. I got back $10 extra from the one I chose. When I finally arrived at my seat the older gentleman sitting next to me was already asleep. How is that possible? I went to the bathroom and then had to shake him awake to be able to get in. Hmm, it may be that the flight originated in Muscat, Oman and he was on that flight. By 3am we were flying away, and I spent five hours trying to sleep. I think I slept ok, considering. I couldn’t see Jeroen as we were separated by the bathroom. I woke up for breakfast and finished watching Florence Foster Jenkins. I quite liked it, despite the fact that my eyes got watery towards the end.
We arrived in Zurich before 7am and managed to take the train home, do a wee bit of grocery shopping, and still be home by 9:30am. Spent the day with the cats and tidying up, to some degree. It’s good to be home, but it was a
