My sleep pattern is starting to get on track. I crashed when I got home last night around 6:30, woke up around 9:30 and read until about 2am, before getting a few hours more. I am trying so hard to stay awake for another few hours so I can hopefully sleep the whole night though!!!
Today I learned my first Arabic word: Jabal means "mountain."
I continued writing the same report at work today, even though there really isn't a whole lot more to do until we get the lab results tomorrow. So, I was fairly bored today. I asked if there was other stuff to do, but they seemed insistent on getting the report just so. I'm not sure that I've ever spent 16 hours straight on a 8 page factual report (plus figures), but ok. I know the work will soon get very complicated and hectic, and maybe that will overwhelm and stress me, but right now, I'm looking forward to it! The good news is that two new people are starting in the next two weeks, so maybe things will pick up and we will all be trained together. Also, it seems to be common knowledge
SPICES!!!
It just looked so pretty to me... I cannot wait to cook! around the office that Jamie and I will be getting an apartment together when she moves to Dubai, so I'm very excited about that! It will be so good to live with someone I know and love, not to mention someone who is very familiar with the area.
I left work a bit early as my transportation still is weird. I was hoping to get a bus to the metro, but that seems overly complicated. So, I got a cab before rush hour and he took me to the Mall of the Emirates. I definitely needed to do some shopping. I tried on a few things, but I really just was not in the mood. I walked through the indoor "Arabian souq" where they sell carpets and other regional goods right in the middle of the mall.
So, I went to the grocery store, Carrefours, and oh. my. god. It was like walking into an outdoor market right in the middle of the mall. It was chaotic, loud and overflowing with just about everything you could possibly imagine! (Except for oatmeal and plastic utensils). Every type of food was found in plentitude - walls of non dairy milk
beans
soybeans, chickpeas, popcorn, black eyed peas, etc... yum!!! cartons, aisles of fruit, a giant fish market with fresh fish in the back of the store, the entire left side covered in all types of bread, etc. I had to move away from the fish market though as the smell started to get to me. I got some more food to sustain me, things that are better than the mini supermarket by my hotel. I got bread, peanut butter, blackberry jam, grapefruit, apples, nectarines, cherries, granola bars, pretzels, and almonds.
I've provided some pictures of inside the store - let me just say I can NOT WAIT to start cooking!
