Waking to the sun streaming through the window and a glorious view of Kizkalesi Castle was a joy to behold. Woolly says – had a slight headache, not sure why!!!!! We arrived on the hotel veranda for a beautiful if simple breakfast with bread rolls to die for, having cost 72TL for a night including breakfast (approximately £29 GBP) it was a bargain, the owners were lovely and very sweet and the view sitting in the sun was a great start to the day. Wanting to see more of Turkey we decided to hire a car and head towards Kizkalesi, east of Alanya and approximately 400km away, having done some research we knew that there were loads of Roman ruins and plenty of castles to see and investigate. Having booked our vehicle on line with a large international car company we gathered together enough to last a night out, collected Woolly from his cosy bed and set off to collect the car. Finding the address given on the net empty we refused to panic and asked for directions finally locating the rental agency a couple of streets away. Puzzled looks greeted our arrival and a lack of Turkish on our part and English on the his side we were given a phone and spoke to a lovely Turkish gentleman who ... read more

Hitchhike to Gaziantep: 5 cars? I am going to break this down because this will give you an idea of our hitchiking experience in southeastern Turkey. Goreme to Gaziantep, home of the best baklava in Turkey. Car 1 A young guy who was making labored breathing sounds as he drove and dropped us in the middle of the town he was going to instead of by the highway. Oh well. Thanks for the ride. We walked a k or so through town and this Turk who had worked in France and spoke pretty damn good French saw us as we passed by and pointed us in the right direction. Only reason I point out the incident is that this happens all the time (with various different languages). Turks are natural linguists. But I have yet to ... read more

THURSDAY 7 OCTOBER Alarm set for 0700 hours. 24°C on the car. Up showered, packed and on the road, for real now. Terra firma all the way (apart from the ferry across the English Channel). Pat set off and we stopped for petrol, at 0757 hrs, 100.O1 YTL, which was just over half a tank. They record your registration number against the transaction. Petrol is 3.66 YTL per litre, so it’s expensive. YTL to the pound is about 2.27. Not much traffic about and initially we were following the coast road eastwards, heading for the motorway, to go north. We swapped drivers about 0920. We stopped at a motorway cafe and had a local breakfast, 2 Nescafe’s, water, olives, boiled eggs, jam, flatbreads, cheeses, good simple fare. Cost 25 YTL. The petrol station had a prayer ... read more

Baraj gölü kenarında buluna... read more
