Kas days 2-3 So Kas is full of cats and dogs (not dissimilar to Santorini - as mentioned) if If could feed them all I would! They are not aggressive or in bad condition, some are pets and some are strays all living a combined existence in the town square, restaurants and bars. They are playful and affectionate and lets be honest in some cases hungry...The Schmackos are a hit for all creatures 'great and small'so much so that we have bought some more!
We have been enjoying our Villa and pool with visits into town for supplies and some social interaction. Kas is a small town and we find ourselves now waving hello and talking to the people in bars, restaurants and shops... The Turkish customs and hospitality are lovely. It is not unusual for a shop keeper to offer you a tea, a restaurant to provide some starters or a drink on the house or a bill to be rounded in your favour. We have some favorite places for sure based on location or the food though mostly because of the people. There is a great bar called 'Bar Celona' and across the laneway is 'Galeri Mozaic' which is run by a lovely young guy called Ferhat, as anticipated I have purchased several hand painted ceramic items!
The food has also been great, you can get very traditional food right through the the Spaghetti House which has a very large list of dishes (only spaghetti of course!) We have some great meals and and have even tried to recreate a restaurant meal at home by buying the spice from the spice man, it was close though not quite...
We have taken a boat ride on a gulet to see the sunken city of Kekova and the town of Simena. It was an all day ride with a few swimming stops (water a little cold..!!) Again the Turkish hospitality was lovely.. Kekova is one of the major sites to see around these parts, basically a volcano caused the town to sink and there are still walls and evidence of buildings under water. You used to be able to swim around the ruins though smartly this is no longer possible so you view it from a boat.
Turkey - olives for breakfast and eggs for afternoon tea! We have adapted somewhat to the varied breakfast
The sign says it all
Castle at Simena - can only be reached by boat/water routines during our travels but it is still possible to get the whole fry up if you really want - enough English tourists to ensure that..
As Julie has mentioned the Kas locals are recognising us now, as this is a pretty sleepy town. Being about the only unshaven person in this town makes it easier for them I suppose, as the locals take pride in manicuring their manly moustaches from what we are told - I am planning a trip to the "Hair and Beard Dresser" for a traditional shave soon - stay tuned!
Almost everyone has 'assumed' we are English and upon explaining we are Australian ask if we live in Vienna! The restaurants and bars we like and frequent now know better and some interesting conversations have ensued, both on Turkey, Australia and other worldly matters. I am constantly amused by the shop or bar owner having a conversation with us, then slipping effortlessly into a chat in German and a quick hi to the French or Italians just arriving! They all pretty much think we are mad for travelling so far, yet they would like to visit Oz but with so many destinations so
close it's a bit of a mission from what I have gathered (for them) to travel so far when there is so much on their doorstep - that applies to the whole of Europe.
I have discovered elma çay (Apple tea) and love it. Julie buys stuff and I get to have a drink with the owner. I have brought some from the 'spice man' and have a few every morning. Many other flavours but I haven't ventured that far yet.
The next few days are 30+ so the pool will get used a bit and we enjoy our little otobüs ride into town in the evening - 2 lira each or a 4km walk (hard decision....)
More soon from sunny Kas...
