Once back in New Delhi, I went to another dentist to get my tooth looked at. This time, I went to the dentist that the US Embassy uses (or so I was told). By this time my tooth felt much better, and the swelling had completely gone down. Much to my relief, the dentist said that everything looks fine, and that there was no need for me to go through surgery. As you can imagine I was pretty happy, I went back to my hotel room, bought a ticket for Istanbul, Turkey, and packed my bags. I was on a flight by that same night! I'stanbul: "Straddling the Bosphorus, its skyline studded with domes and minarets, Istanbul is one of the truly great romantic cities. Its history tracks back from Byzantium to Constantinople to its place ... read more

Greetıngs from Istanbul. So I decıded to start one of these stupıd blogs for two reasons. 1. Richard, my faıthful travellıng companıon, has one and that guılted me ınto decıdıng to keep a better record of my journey. 2. I am pretty much out of money and I hope that verbal descrıptıons of my near poverty and destıtutıon will convınce my Mom to reload my ATM account from the 24 dollars that seem to be left, and I stıll have no ıdea how much thıs Turkısh lıra ıs worth. Untıl I fıgure that out I wıll be unable to wıthdraw any money, and wıll contınue to dıne lıke I dıd today. The next chapter in my yachting saga took a slightly different turn. Looking for a move up from chief chamois technician I took a job as second mate on a 50 metre motor yacht which at the time was in the last stages of construction in a shipyard in Istanbul. It was to turn into quite an education in how not to build boats. Our first little disaster occurred when a poorly tightened hose clamp on the air conditioning unit in the galley gave way and spilled all of its lovely blue fluid into the flooring, flooding the cabin below and destroying several thousand Euros worth of silk wall hangings. The galley was supposed to be a completely sealed fireproof box, yay for Turkish boat building! That was a fairly good indication of the way things ... read more

Istanbul at last. It had been a long hard journey getting here, and we were more than ready to find somewhere to sleep!! So far we had been organising our accommodation ahead of time, but for the first time, we decided that we were going to get there and figure it all out!! Had been recommended a few places by others, and so, armed with our knowledge, we clambered out of our buses, hefted our backpacks and set forth!! 9am, peak hour just settling, call to prayer blaring from minarets. Two lonely travellers far from home wander the streets of Istanbul trying to find a place that they can call home for the next two days. With the backpacks getting heavier by the minute, and the sun getting hotter, tempers start to arise, and blame starts ... read more

After a few great days at Selcuk, it was time to move on the capital city, Istanbul. Getting from Selcuk to Istanbul involved an overnight bus journey. Now we've seen all kinds of buses on our trips, and have come to loath them. In fact, I loath all overland journeys. And now I can add sea journeys and air journeys as well. Which either means that we will never leave Australia again or I'll have to focus on arriving rather than the trip there :) But we had heard great things about the buses in Turkey. Comfortable, stewards who wait on you hand and foot, as many drinks as you like, when you like. So wasn't feeling that bad about it... We met up with an English couple at the bustop, who had also had great ... read more

This place leaves you lost for words. It is the proudest we have ever been to be a New Zealander Those heroes that shed their blood And lost their lives… You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies And the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side Here in this country of ours… You, the mothers, Who sent their sons from far away countries Wipe away your tears, Your sons are now lying in our bosom And are in peace After having lost their lives on this land.
