It has been an eventful day. Firstly, on leaving Alexandropolis, someone had obviously checked out the saddlebags. Nothing was taken because there was nothing in them. It happened on the past trip as well, in Ancona so maybe it is something about street parking in port cities. We loaded up the bike and after coffee set off for the Turkish border. It all went smooth until we got to the border. Exiting Greece was easy enough. Then Turkey, entry with a vehicle is a multi stage process. Got through the first bit where details of the bike were taken. Then after some back and forth sorted the visas and passport stuff. Then we got sent back to the start because the registration number of the bike had been entered incorrectly. LT07TZX had become LTO7TZX (the letter O rather than the number 0). Or maybe it was entered correctly but the man at the other end misunderstood, He had a whole load f trainees with him. Eventually it was all sorted and we were on our way, The first few miles were pretty dull, long straight highways, the only excitement being dodging pot holes and broken bits of road. The last part
Ashley had a shave
And a massage, and much grooming of the ride down the Geliboli penninsula was nice, pine forests on one side, the sea on the other as the road wound along the coast, We arrived in Eceabat just in time for a ferry to Canakkale, and by early afternoon rolled of the ferry into Asia.
Hilary was despatched to find a hotel. Which she did. It is cheap. It has no WiFi (though we haven't seen many that do). We soon discovered the lack of hot water, though it was vaguely warm and we were very hot. It took us half an hour to notice that the room has no toilet. No major deal as the hall toilet is only a couple of paces from the door. The hotel people speak no English and Hilary understands this is 60 YTL a night, including breakfast. Thats about 25 sterling.
After showers we had a wander then we bought a map (not a very good one) and Ashley went for a shave. Which took over an hour. During which Hilary uploaded stuff to the Internet, re-organised the data stick and went for a glass of tea. We will upload the picture of the shaven Ashley. They did
a lot of work on him and he looks very smart and groomed.
We went for a walk - we wanted to look around the residential areas - we saw quite a lot of flats for sale and it is interesting to see them in reality as these are the properties that don't go on the internet. No we are sitting in a harbourside bar with cold beer, typing up entries for the blog.
Oh, we have noticed lurid-looking editions of the Tudors, the Other Boleyn Girl etc. etc. These clearly appeal strongly to local sensibilities. I like that.
Of interest perhaps. A week ago, as in last Thursday we started entries for this trip with the pre trip “we did this” thing. We did that Last Thursday between 2pm and 2.30pm. This Thursday at almost precisely the same time we crossed the Dardanelles, from Eceabat to Canakkale, from Europe to Asia.
