We climbed to up Yoros Castle above the town of Anadolu Kavagi, where we took this photo..
The Symplegades or "Clashing Rocks" were encountered by Jason and the Argonauts as they tried to sail into the Black Sea. As we crossed the Bosporus today, we passed what historian think are the rocks that the tale was based upon. They are now marked with lights and pillars, but still hold dangers for the many ships that pass them each day. We got to see them from the boat we took on a cruise up the Bosporus and back yesterday. there is so much history crowded in to this region...layers and layers of it!

The cruise is a must-do if you visit here: only costs about $8.00 round-trip, and lasts 6 hours (including a three hour lunch stop at the turn-around point). A vendor comes around with hot coffee and tea for sale. you can sit inside or out.

At the turn-around point, besides eating a fresh fish lunch, we hiked up to the near-by ruins that give a vast view of the Bosporus. We met a young man from Algeria named Nastro on the boat who was traveling with his newly wed brother and sister-in-law. He is in love with Italy, and wants to go there, but

has to wait until he gets a posting as a pharmacist (he just graduated, I think..). His brother and sister-in-law are both dentists. They were all having so much fun...and Nastro loved joking with Bill. He has invited us to visit his family in Algeria!

Yogurt!Yogurt!
Yogurt!

One of the stops (they are very brief, under 2 minutes) was at Kanlica, famous for its yogurt. It's loaded on board and sold...almost everyone buys one! Delicious...

Seen from the boat as we arrive in Anadolu Kavagi. It was built in Byzantine times, and occupies a very strategic spot on the Bosporus. this part is now controlled by the military on both sides. We had to hike through part of a military base to get to the top.
