angie and the steam engine 😊 After braving and almost getting used to the freezing and minus temperatures in France and England...we were really happy to land in Istanbul and be told it was 14degrees! Back to Istanbul, we stayed the night and then checked out the underground cisterns and then took the ferry to the golden horn and had tea at Pierre Lotti's house...before getting the night train to Ankara! It was super nice to travel in a sleeper train for the overnight trip instead of the bus and we arrived in Ankara and then headed straight to the Indian embassy to apply for my visa for India...our only reason for stopping in Ankara! After waiting in line and being searched before entering the embassy...I was told that I would also need to provide a bank statement, flights in and out of india...or since we were going overland... my visas for both iran and pakistan!!! Crazy what you need for visas these days...anyway since we were planning on getting our Iran visa next...we gave up on that idea and would need to try apply somewhere else!
In Ankara we got to have our first couch surfing experience with Adelaide, a French teacher (funnily enough

the cathedral cistern from Brittany too) living in Ankara! Couchsurfing is cool network of people around the world who open their homes to travellers to stay on their couches...and a great way for cultural exchange and meet people! Since I had no luck with the visa we only stayed with Adelaide for one night but was great to be able to share a meal with nice company! What a great intro to couchsurfing...thanks Adelaide for your an absolute treat...and walked around the old area in Ankara! We also realised in Ankara that we lost our debit card...whoops! Thanks to Michele for sorting that one out 😊
The next stop was Trabzon to get our Iran visa...so another overnight bus and then we headed to the Iran embassy ...where I had amazing welcome! Before we headed off the next day we treated ourselves to the local Hamam...which my first experience to cover my head in a scarf...and after the frustrations of the day before at the Indian embassy...had one of the most easist and quickest visa applications ever!!! We then got on a bus to Ezurum and spent the night before heading for the Iran border the next day! This bus trip was

cathedral cistern head of medusa another amazing one! The road went through some amazing places in eastern turkey...most of the ground and the mountains were covered in snow and the road winding through these mountains and passing small villages was quite amazing! Sometimes the snow cover was so thick that you looked on both sides of the bus and it was like the bus was travelling through a white tunnel! Jean met someone who was Kurdish but living in France so french speaking! we then took a mini bus to the border where i put on my scarf...ready for entry to Iran!
